Hi Everyone,
I am looking for information on the above who is my G.G.Grandfather. I am unable to find his birth place or any details on his parents and siblings. It is here the links go cold. Thomas William Crowley married Edith Maud Marshall in New Zealand and had 12 children, one being my grandfather John Henry (Jack) Crowley. I do remember my family saying they thought the Crowley's originated from Dublin. If anyone could help me I would be forever grateful. And who knows, I may find relatives I would never have known about. I was born in New Zealand but live in Redcliffe Queensland Australia. Thanking you sincerely,
Maxine Wilson (nee Rose)

Hi Maxine.
Crowley is very common in the West Co. Cork.
Dublin could be a transit point for Liverpool en route to NZ.
Have you done a DNA test?

Best regards,
Michael O'Carroll.

Hello Maxine,

There is a Thomas William Crowley marrying an Edith Maud Marshall in 1876. The registration number is 1876/2393. You can order the certificate/print-out (using the registration number), which hopefully has their parents names and perhaps more details, from: https://bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/. Printout costs 25 NZ.

Then for a Thomas Crowley born in Ireland .. there is one person who fits the time and the full name:

"Thomas William Crowley" baptised on 15 August 1852.
He was from BOOTERSTOWN, Co Dublin, Ireland
Denomination:: Catholic
Father: William Crowley
Mother: Mary [no surname recorded]
Godparents: John Malone and Margaret Dun Leavy.

There is a record of a catholic boy 'Thomas Crowley' age 14 years on 7 Oct 1865 'stealing pears' and being held at GRANGEGORMAN FEMALE PRISON, Dublin, as a juvenile. The sentence looks like it is '14 days & 5 years [word?]'. Excessive! The mother had died and it looks like the father had been in Gaol.

The record is digitised here: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633706#page/44/mode/1up and go to the 15 August 1852.

I can find only one William Crowley who married a 'Mary' 10 years +/- 1845 as follows:
Note: There are none in Dublin for any time period on rootsireland.ie.

William Crowly [spelling varient] and Mary Doolin
Married in Castlelyons, Co Cork
On 12 July 1845
No fathers' names given.

Hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for the valuable information you have supplied above. I am so appreciative of all the help. I will certainly keep all the contact points for future use. I am fairly new at this geneology tracing so still floundering a tad. Once again, thank you all so much for going to the trouble of helping me. Regards. Maxine Wilson (Rose)

Thank you again for all replies. Information has helped no end. I have taken note of all sites you have provided for future use. At least Iknow we have at least one member of the ancestors who obviously had a stint in prison even if it wss just for pinching a couple of pears.Harsh reprimand for a 14 yr old kid haha....Imagine the hue and cry if that was to happen in this day and age. Once again.......,thank you so very much for your help. Maxine

Hi Maxine

As Cliff observed

Thomas William Crowley was baptised 15 Aug 1852, just south of Dublin City, in Booterstown RC

His parents: William Crowley and Mary [not recorded in this Entry]

And Sponsors: John Malone & Margaret Dunleavy

Booterstown | Microfilm 09084 / 06, 4 Jan 1846 – 2 Jul 1854

Your Thomas is slightly younger than you suspected.

Not unusual in an age where a precise knowledge of one’s age was unusual.

Before paperwork was needed by everyone, that exact knowledge could only be obtained by returning to the Church in question, to ask the Sacristan to see the Register.

Also, in an age when everyone, other than a lucky few who possessed an occupational pension, worked until they dropped, dropping your age amounted to a competitive advantage when seeking employment!!

I believe this is your William Crowley and his wife Mary Jane McCullagh.

This couple also had a d. Mary Jane Crowley bapt in St Andrews RC, Westland Row, Dublin in 1864. The sp John Byrne & Anna Martin.

The parents then lived at 26 Queen’s Square, nowadays renamed as Pearse Square, off Pearse Street in Dublin City.

And another son John James bapt 25 March 1866 in Rathmines RC

In desperate Latin, and worse English spelling, which I corrected, John James Crowley was born 15 Mar 1866 in 89 Upper Leeson Street to William John Crowley & Mary Jane nee McCullagh, and baptised 10 days later in Rathmines RC, sp Dennis Dillon & Harriet McDermott
