Uchtred FitzGospatrick, Lord of Raby - Is his father Maldren rather than Gospatrick

His father, Gospatric, Earl of Dunbar IS Gospatrick mac Maldred, after all. So no conflict there.

The Prior of Durham granted Staindropshire to one Dolfin son of Uchtred in 1131. But they used to choose their baby names from a very short list, so it's painful to work out who is who.

I never came across a source for the father of Uchtred. But having chased it I've got as far as

Weis, Ancestral Roots, 8th edition, page 232, 247-21

MALDRED, b abt 1045, held the Manor of Winlaton 1084, undoubtedly son of Maldred and Ealdgyth, and certainly father of Uchtred (NEHGR 106 (1952) 186-190, G. Andrews Moriarty, Origin of Neville of Raby; Sir William Gibson, The Manor of Winlaton)

I take it "undoubtedly" is the usual code for no actual direct evidence.

states that MALDRED, son of CRINAN had two sons.
1. GOSPATRICK ([1040/48]-[1075]). Earl Gospatrick & his wife had one child:
. GOSPATRICK (-[killed in battle Cowton Moor, near Northallerton 22 Aug 1138]

2. MALDRED . Maldred & his wife had two children:
a) ROBERT .
b) UHTRED (-6 Nov ----). Uhtred & his wife had [two] children:
i) [1402]DOLFIN .
ii) [GOSPATRICK

If I read correctly, and if he is correct, Maldred and Gospatrick are brothers and not the same individual.. Again, if he is correct, it is Maldred, son of Maldred who was the father of Dolfin, not Maldred son of Gospatrick.

However, Gospatrick, son of Maldred, son of CRINAN, had a son Gospatrick, who had an illegitimate son Dolfin.

Do you think Cawley is correct that Maldred and Gospatrick are brothers and not the same individual?

Written a long time before the Moriarty article. Balfour Paul was aware of the obscure Maldred son of Maldred, and the claim that he was the ancestor of the Nevilles.

And Complete Peerage 2nd edition was aware of Balfour Paul, but they stopped at Uchtred, although they put a lot of effort into rewriting the early Nevilles generally.

Maldred jr, brother of Gospatrick, did have a profile, but it was merged into Gospatrick in 2017. Then the parents were locked up so he can't be added back.

There were actually 5 Maldreds merged into their brother Uchtred, before the point in 2014 when the unmerge function kicked in.

I unmerged them, so now there is a Maldred fitzMaldred.

So there's that.
