Does anyone know where in the Palatinate that David Martin and his father, Christian moved to? I lived in Mainz and Baumholder when my dad was in the Army, and I'm curious as to far away we lived from each other. Also, were they neighbors with the Webers while they were still in Switzerland or after they moved to Germany?
Also, I was always told the reason for Christian's imprisonment was due to religious persecution. Does anyone have any details as to how or when that happened and where he was imprisoned at?
Thanks in advance!
-Your cousin, Matthew
According to RIchard W. Davis' Report on the "reconstructed" 1709 census of Mennonites, Christian (40), his wife Elizabeth and sons Christian (15), Jacob (11), Hans Heinrich (8) and David (4) were living in Bockshaft (a small hamlet southeast of Sinsheim (it's between Ittlingen & now part of Kirchardt) in Baden. Bockschaft is about 135 km from Mainz and 180 km from Baumholder, according to Google Maps. At that time, Bockshaft was part of the Hasselbach Congregation, which is a far north west suburb of Sinsheim.
There were some Webers living somewhere in the area of Sinsheim, but my immigrant Weber ancestor, Hans Wäber, lived on the west side of the Rhine in places like Hamm, Neustadt, Oggersheim.
I don't have information on where Christian Martin had lived in Switzerland, but the Webers had come from Canton Zürich, in places such as Albis and Bäretswil.
Hope this helps,
