How are the McDowells in Ireland related. I understood that the Lord went to Ireland after Catherine Of Argon (Henry VIII troops) defeated James III of Scotland in 1513. Can someone tell me if this is correct. If not, does someone know the link? Earliest history i have of our family is William b. 1769 in Ulster (poss. Cavan) m. Margaret Kennedy (Kenedy) in 1800. No birth records or marriage records, only the 1821 census. Thanks.

If you know hat some of the MacDowels went to Ulster after the Battle of Flodden, then it is highly likely that indeed your McDowels are descended from them.

But the link would have to get built pup from the bottom, and as you note, the records are scanty.

Even if you went to Ulster and found land records for the MacDowells in the 16th century, it still wouldn’t give you the link to the 18th century.

I had much the same issue with my Elliotts, who had been in Ulster for a couple hundred years at least, before going to America, but still called themselves Scots.

But we can’t take the line back past the early 19th century. The records simply are not there.

Brick wall.
