Mr G. B. Carter,
Dear grandson,
I received your letter one day this week and I was glad to hear from you. We never did receive any letters from you. John B. says he never did get any either. It was not your fault for not writing to you for you didn’t know your post office. John B. Pennington does not live in this state now. He moved from his old place across the river to a place in Texas. He came back and spent the night here last week. He is not satisfied. He bought 310 acres and paid $5,000.00 for it. He says that a part of it is as bad as a house floor, while some of it is not as bad. You can’t find a rock on it as big as your fist except some that was hauled there. Craig went to see his farm. He thinks it a good one. Your grandmother is dead & she died 3 yrs ago the 15th of June. I was 86 yrs old the 5th day of October. How much to do to you own and have you got it paid for? Who did you marry and how many children have you got? If any. There has been lots of sickness in this country but not in our neighborhood. The typhoid fever has been raging in this county. Cecil Parson’s and Zion Flassary’s wives are both dead. They died this fall of Typhoid fever. When you write again tell all the news. I will close; write soon.
Your grandfather
John Pennington
