His wife could not be the heiress of the the title Marshal as its a male only role. Originally the title marshal was given to the man who looked after the horses. Later it meant more and then became the surname. Gilbert got the title after himself and his son John fought against the other persons for the right to bear it.

Hi Sarah, I would assume that due to her gender the title was intended to be transferred to her husband when she married. And it was with members of her family that they were forced to prove their right to title.

Yes, that is what "sui uxoris" means--through the wife's inheritance.
