I am descendant to Regina Markus (nee Neumann) and Moritz Markus in Graz.
Following information is based on notes from their daughter, Johanna Lechner (nee Markus) who emigrated to Israel some 9 months after Anschluss when she was 17. I think all siblings lived in Graz. My additions within [square brackets]

Moritz Markus was born on 3 Nov 1875 and died 14 Dec 1932, traffic accident, he was on bike.
Regina Markus (nee Neumann) [number 358 on the list "Holocaust Victims, Survivors, and Emigrants"?] was born in Murska Sobota, then in the Hungarian part of Austria-Hungary, today Slovenia on 10 Apr 1885, she moved to Gratz and married Moritz, she died in the holocaust 1942. They had one child only, my grandmother.

Siblings of Moritz Markus are:
Johanna Markus, died in the holocaust, will get back on her occupation after handwriting consultation.
Emil Markus [no. 356?], had a clothing store. Married to Elsa [nee Spitzer?]. Daughter: Lisabeth, was at mental hospital at some time [no 367?]
Mathilde Markus, piano teacher, died in cancer
Ludwig Markus, died in the holocaust
Otto Markus, died in WW1

Above names may not be in order of birth. But Moritz was the third oldest according to notes from my grandmother.

Dear Etay
Thanks for the contribution. I don’t see any links to my ancestors but find it interesting and might be useful for future research.

Etay,

I'm working on your family now and will add what I can find.

I'm still working, but have found all of the siblings, including some who died young.

Etay I have a project to document the Jewish soldiers that fell in WWI and I would be interested to hear about Otto Markus.

@ Eric Feinstein : I'll ask my aunt if she know more and get back to you. He died before my grandmother was born but perhaps she was told stories about him and past them onto her children. I assume Otto was a solider, and as such there hopefully are military records of him.

I saw many people from Graz traveled to Haifa on S.S. Liesel 1939, other than Emil Markus and his daugher Lisebeth. Was wife and mother Elsa Markus (nee Spitzer) on that ship as well?
Did other jews return to Graz after WW2 like Emil's family did?

Does anybody have experience in requesting journals from LKH Graz II Standort Süd in Graz. Would be interesting to know if and when Lisebeth was a patient there.

I checked address book of 1930 and 1935 and Ludwig has "Rsdr." as occupation. Reisender = Journeyman, Traveller

That would be travelling salesman?

It would be interesting to know if Moritz, Mathilde and maybe also Otto had graves in Graz.
Is Jewish Cemetery Graz searchable anywhere?

"Was wife and mother Elsa Markus (nee Spitzer) on that ship as well?"
Answering my own question. I found documents of Elsa Markus (nee Spitzer) on the same ship as the rest of the family. With names her of parents. Will add documents to her profile.

I've already added the grave information. They are at https://secure.ikg-wien.at/Db/Fh/

Yes, Reisender means traveling salesman.

I'll look for more on Elsa Markus.

You may want to see if you can get information on Lisabeth at LKH Graz II Standort Süd in Graz by posting a question at www.Genteam.at or to austria@genlist.at

Not many people returned to Graz after the war, but they did reestablish a small Jewish community.

I'll add Elsa to the list of those who emigrated, referencing the document you found.

I sent your query to my family but so far nobody has come forth with more information on Otto Markus.
However i found this:
https://digi.landesbibliothek.at/viewer/image/AC00652555/527/LOG_0185/
Matched in name, year of birth, city of birth and testimony of my grandmother that he died in WW1.
Are you familiar with this type of records and can help me with the word before "Troppau, Schlesien"?

Yes it says he died in the Barackenspital in Troppau, Schlesien. This is now Opava Czech Republic. If you go to the JOWBR of JewishGen which has documented this cemetery.
Yes you will find he is buried there

Many thanks.

Do you also know which army "8, Komp" belonged to?

It was in the name of the book you referred me to
Geschichte des Steirischen K. u. K. Infanterie-Regimentes Nr. 27 Band II (II. / 1937)
HIstory of the Styrian Austro-Hungarian 27th Infantry-Regiment

Thank you Private User
I bought the books at an a second-hand bookshop online.
Through JewishGen I found the grave documented at http://www.chewra.com/keshetnew/kweb/tomb_detail.aspx?tomb=18624&am...
Lots of vegetation to clear but the stone looks preserved enough. Hopefully we can visit it some time not too far from now.
