Hello! My name is Michael Liffmann and I have been working on my own family's history (Germany to Colombia) and now have some information to share about some of my wife's (Christy Diniz Liffmann) Luso-Brazilian ancestry.

Her second great-grandmother was Cecilia Gonçalves de Moraes. She married the Brazilian intellectual known as “Doutor Escritor” (Doctor Writer), Galdino Fernandes Pinheiro (1849-1906). He is listed in the Registo Civil records as having the title of “Doutor” and appears in the encyclopedia-like, Dicionário Bibliográfico Brasileiro by Augusto Vitorino Alves. Galdino was born in Piraí to Joaquim João and Luiza Rosa Pinheiro and received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1867, specializing in social sciences and law. College educations were rare at the time. Besides being an educator, author, and a political figure (Deputy of the Provincial Assembly), he was heavily involved in his wife’s family business and owned a sizable coffee plantation. He wrote under the pseudonym “Galpi” (for Galpino Pinheiro) and his works include Narrativas Brasileiras (1884) and O Flor: Costumes Brasileiros” (1885).

O Flor is available through Amazon.com for approximately $28. We have a copy in our library.

Cecilia and Galdino had one son, Joaquim de Moraes Pinheiro (1882-1971).
