South Africa, the country in which i live, has changed - evolved over more than three centuries. So if I say someone was born in 1800s I want to be able to enter the birth place as it was in 1800. the person wasn't born in this year or century and I want to reflect the true then current name for the place of birth. It is pointless trying to use new names - regions that did not exist at the time i.e. 1800s. So if that can't be done it is not a true reflection of history. After all a family tree is an historical document and should reflect as such

You can do that, just open the Place details and you will get individual fields to fill in.

Thanks for that information Jonathan I shall try that

Jonathan Scott Krengel,

You could ask a curator for your country to add places to Geni, but it has to be done by hand by a curator so it is not a very practical solution.

There is also the problem that if you start to type a name all names that match those characters you typed will be selected but only the first 5 will be shown. The selection list is worldwide and for all periods, so adding a place name will affect all users worldwide.
Adding the same name multiple times (for different periods and with different sub items) will make it harder to find other places that start with the same characters.
This means most curators will be hesitant to add historical place names for places that are valid for only a few profiles.

Job Waterreus,

I'm confused. I'm not a curator and I don't use the auto match system for any profile I enter. I always open the details and fill in the individual fields.

If you don't open the details and just start typing, Geni will suggests place names from a Geni database with known places.
The curators have the ability to add places in that database but they have to do that by hand in more or less the same way as you do it when opening the location details for a place on a profile.
So when there is a location missing in that database that you use very frequently you could ask a curator to to add it to the database for you.
If the curator would add it then you would only have to enter the first few characters of the name for Geni to suggest it in the list from which you can choose a location.

Job Waterreus - I am with Jonathan. I always open the details and enter from there. And I did see that he had spelled out very clearly that he did that. I have no desire to do it the other way.
Especially given all the different changes it has gone thru!!

Yes, you can do that and it has the advantage that you can choose exactly what will be in each field, but it takes at bit more time to enter the data that way, but it has the advantages you mention.
