Was he really 170 years old when his son was born?

I have not seen any evidence for the genealogy line prior to Sir John De Crosby c1440. All I have seen is the statement "Sir John was a lineal descendent of Sir Pierce Crosby, who descended from Sir Odo de Crosby, son of Sir Simon de Crosby, born ~1220, son of Sir Charles Crosby, born ~1200." but never any reference to documents that prove this. It is worth capturing this information in this tree on Geni which has been put together by the web site in the hope one day someone can show hard evidence of this lineage. A lot of the references made to links on this subject are now dead and go nowhere.

Paul is correct in that there is a data gap between Sir Odo and his "father" and that someone born in 1260 could not possibly sire someone born in 1390! Something is missing.
