Dear Administrators of this Profile:

I have encountered a question regarding whether Rabbi Samuel Zalman Shapira can be the father of Asher Katz. The reason for the doubt is that Asher Katz and his lineage are a Cohanic line, while the line from R' Samuel's other son, Rabbi Shlomo Salman Spira, ABD Heilbron, does not appear to be a Cohanic line. This is further highlighted by the yDNA haplogroups currently assigned to each lineage (for the Asher Katz line it is a J group while for the Shlomo ben Samuel Zalman line it is a G group. So the question I present is whether it would be possible to provide any supporting evidence for the paternity of Asher Katz Shapiro as being R' Samuel Zalmen Shapiro's biological son?

Asher is not listed on the Friedman version of the tree. https://www.geni.com/photo/view?photo_id=6000000024418361851

I have clicked on the Friedman URL but am told: "You don't have permission to view this item." Is there another way to view? Is it possible to know where Friedman is getting the information about the tree?

This is a post-script to my initial post. A co-researcher has just pointed out to me that in his family several generations ago there was an adoption of a Cohen (male) child by an aunt who was married to a Levite. The Cohen child was raised as a Levite and his descendants ever since have considered themselves to be Levites. It is only now, with the benefit of yDNA, that we can see that the adopted child was a Cohen. I am not saying this the same story with Shlomo Zalman but it is a possibility to add to the alternatives. This would be one way to explain how two sons of the same father could have different yDNA identities.

That is a brilliant bit of research. Thank you!

Thanks Peter. Can you find a way for me to see that tree you referred on 29 May? Appreciated.

The tree is in the photos for Rabbi Shlomo Salman Spira, ABD Heilbron

Look for the media tab next to the overview on his profile. There are three photos of his tree from Unbroken Chain.
