Abraham Gomes Da Costa
Can anyone demonstrate evidence for place and DoB please. Where does Portugal and 1681 originate?

I'll keep checking things but as far as I can tell, the records pertaining to Abraham Gomes da Costa who was buried on August 12, 1761 in Beth Haim in Ouderkerk has no information that could be correlated to any other information. When I get some time I'll have to see how many people with the name Abraham Gomes da Costa were part of the Amsterdam community and if they used any aliases as well.

I was told by someone that the death record for Amsterdam I uploaded is not for this Abraham Gomes Da Costa. He said that there are two Gomes Da Costa, one in London and one in Amsterdam.

this link is for the marriage record of Abraham (end of page 22) and this isn't the same Abraham that died in Amsterdam

The birth year of 1681 found on the Geni profile of our Abraham seems to correspond to a second Abraham GDC who who turns up in London in 1733 and is circumcised at the age of 52. We know he is not the Abraham that was married to Abigail, as there is a ketubah for our Abraham and Abigail on 15 May 1728 and a circumcision record for Abraham on 13 August 1727 as you would expect. They are marked as Vindos De Portugal, i.e. refugees from Portugal.

We don't know the real birth year of Abigail's husband Abraham.

Lainie is right, the photo attached to the profile of a burial record in 1761 in Amsterdam is not for Abigail's husband Abraham GDC. My research indicates that our Abraham GDC died and is buried in London at the Novo Cemetery of Bevis Marks, either in 1754 or 1764. I won't know for sure which it is until I can access the original ketubot of his sons Aaron and Isaac at the London Metropolitan Archives later in the autumn. They were both married in 1757 and their ketubot should indicate whether their father was alive or deceased.

There is an Amsterdam branch of the GDC family, whose relationship to the London family I am not certain. The Abraham that died in 1761 may be a member of that family. alternatively he may be the Abraham that was circumcised in London aged 52 in 1733.

I suspect it is worth correcting these errors in Abraham's profile.

I'm also not convinced that Esther and Jacob are Abraham and Abigail's children, Orin they are, that the DOB info is correct. Esther is supposed to have been born in 1700. does anyone if there is any evidence for this date or her parentage?

Jacob's DOB of 1740 is also clearly wrong. Abigail would have been far too old to have a child in 1740. There is an adult circumcision record on 11 March 1740 in the Bevis Marks records for a Jacob, son of Abraham Gomes Da Costa who arrives as a refugee from Portugal, so maybe whoever put that date as his DOB got confused with that? If this Jacob is our Abraham and Abigail's son, his birth date will have been considerably earlier.

It is also not clear to me why Jacob arrives in London in 1740, when other members of the GDC family arrive between 1727-1732. Anyone have any clues?

While we're cleaning up Abraham's profile, I'd also like to query the Solomon or Samuel GDC listed as Abraham's brother.

Salomon/Samuel Gomes da Costa

Do when know where this information comes from? My own research, indicates that Abraham had a brother named Isaac, who arrived in London from Portugal at around the same time in c. 1727. They were both circumcised at Bevis Marks on the same day on 13 August 1727 and re-married to their respective wives, Abigail and Ribca on the same day, 15 May 1728. Issac died in 1738 and is buried at the Novo Cemetery. His wife Ribca seems to have disappeared from the scene (possibly remarried?) as I can't find any further references to her or to any children they may have had.

I am curious as to the provenance of the Solomon/Solomon attribution as a brother of Abraham. Does anyone have any evidence for this, as he doesn't show up in any of the Bevis Marks records?

Randy Schoenberg When I get a moment I will review and look further but right now I am very limited on time and behind on some other projects, so it might be a bit before I can look into this.

There were two men with similar names - Abraham da Costa Gomes and Abraham Gomes da Costa - living around the same time and it seems that at some point someone confused the two and put information on both into the profile in summer 2020 when this discussion began. From my understanding, the original profile was actually for Abraham da Costa Gomes of Amsterdam, as indicated by a burial card at Beth Haim in Amsterdam and a circumcision in Amsterdam. I added these documents to further cement who the profile was for on August 16th, 2020, but because I am too busy to keep track of things, it seems all further editing and merging on this profile cemented this profile to now be Abraham Gomes da Costa of London. I will be creating a new profile for Abraham da Costa Gomes in Amsterdam and connecting the correct documentation.

The Da Costa tree is complicated and many errors creep in, in particular a non-existent Patrick da Costa who, some would believe, was actually real. As fast as a profile is deleted for a non-existent Patrick da Costa born in the 1600s, somebody is guaranteed to add a new one, adamant that he existed but without any evidence. When requested to delete the profile, messages are ignored. I have changed the name of the latest Patrick to N.N., Latin for name unknown.

I have identified the source of the new amendments of “Abran“-

This is the hosting website that has all the names of aristocrats translated into Dutch which are copied time and again on to Geni. A profile for Johann von der Schmidt, Graf (Count) von der Braun will be changed on Geni to Jan van de Smit, graaf van de Bruin. But that wasn’t his name and it is all nonsense.
