There are 2 sets of parents put forward for William Mansfield, [Convict “Calcutta” 1803]

William Henry Mansfield
* father - richard mansfield
* mother - margaret mansfield

William Mansfield
* father - William ? Mansfield
* mother - Mary ? Mansfield

Can anyone provide any supporting documentation to connect William MANSFIELD the Convict with these families?

A few facts, but not really helpful as to the question:

* William Mansfield of the 'Calcutta' was tried in Taunton at the Somerset Assizes. In all of his records there is no 'William Henry'

* A William Mansfield, born to Richard & Margaret Mansfield, was baptised in the Church of St. Mary, North Petherton, on 15 Jan. 1775;

* There was a William Henry Mansfield living in Leyton, Essex about the same time, but was never a convict;

* A William Henry Mansfield who died in 1853, in Hobart, was a child.

So,............
It is probably that our William Mansfield was born to Richard & Margaret being that his birth and conviction were from the same area. Circumstantial only @ present. Unfortunately, none of his convict records state a 'Native Place', so a 'hard' relationship may not be possible

Some other relevent dates
On his hulk records in 1803 he was 24/25 (1778/9)
In the paper 7 Sep 1801 he was 22/23 (1778/1779)

The death dates are confusing, there are three differences:
The TAMIOT lists death as 31 Aug 1952 "per Calcutta" aged 74. (was also listed as Aug on the pioneer index who used information from the TAMIOT) Compared to a listing of St Peters burials this should read 26 Dec 1952 "per Calcutta" aged 74 and "husband of Maria" indicate that this is the same burial on both records, also the St Peters list has date of burial as 31 Dec 1952.

There are also two death records.
Wm died 26 Dec 1852 aged 76 Liver Complaint (1775/1776) Hobart, informat friend in Eliz St reg 31 Dec 1852
Wm died 26 Dec 1852 aged 74 Decay of Nature (1777/1778) informant blank Reg. May 20 1853

This may have been re-registered to correct age??

I had to wonder if Aug wasn't the official time of death after an inquiry, but there is absolutely no evidence of this, it was just a thought as to all the different records.

I also have never seen the name William Henry connected to William Mansfield.

I had seen a discussion where it was said he had changed his age for the military, but i cant see why someone would need to make themselves younger and the only "military record as such that I have seen was on his wanted add in the paper.

"Escaped from Justice, on Saturday Morning, August 29, 1801, about two miles for Dorchester, on the Blandford Road, WILLIAM MANSFIELD, a deserter from the Suffolk Militia, charged with robbing James King of a silver watch. He is 22 years of age, rather sun-burnt, five feet eight inches high, smart made, grey eyes, dark cropped hair, a mark of two spots of gunpowder on his left ear, two or three moles on the left side of his face; had on a light coat, metal buttons, striped gingham waistcoat, white nankeen breeches, brown worsted stockings, and shoes tied with strings.
Whoever will apprehend him, and lodge him in any of his Majestry's gaols shall receive a REWARD of FIVE GUINEAS, by applying to the Constables of the borough of Shaftesbury, over and above what is allowed by Act of Parliament". Sherborne Mercury of Monday 7 Sep 1801.

** He was actually charged with knocking down Henry Blythsea (James King in the papers) on the King's highway.

"William Mansfield, removed from Dorset for knocking down Henry Bythsea, Esq. and robbing him of a silver watch, was sentenced at the Assizes of Somerset held at Taunton, (which) ended on Wednesday" - Western Flying Post and Sherborne & Yeovil Mercury 12 Apr 1802.

William Mansfield and Mary Garrett also have a son called John Garrett-Mansfield (John Garrett or Mansfield) that was baptised in Stanford Rivers, Essex, England in 1782.
(I am unable to add him to their profiles)
He may indicate a connection for William Mansfield (Calcutta) to William Mansfield (sometimes mentioned as Thomas) and Mary Garrett, and the possible reason behind William (Calcutta) naming his son James Garret Mansfield.

I purchased a book Dispatched to the Derwent by Malcolm Dale, it is written as a historical novel but is based on documents, family letters, diaries and research from notable convict historians which also says that William Mansfield (Calcutta) was the son of William Mansfield and Mary Garrett.

Hi Ara, you would need to look at the specific sources provided and be able to provide them.

Thanks
Leanne
