Hello Im trying to find my maternal side relative roots in Germany, I have already tried 3 or 4 facebook German genealogy groups, but not much help. All info I have found so far are from St Petersburgh.
I dont know how to search German archives is there is any archives? so any help is very welcome to find these.

Hi Antii,
I also find German and Prussian research difficult.

My ancestors Friedrich Hoppe and his wife Charlotte Toparkus lived in the Konigsburg area, Prussia . Also ancestors Heinrich Wilhelm August Richter and his wife Friedrika Charlotte Louise Woller lived in Pomerania. I obtained this through the marriage certificate of my great grandparents, Carl Ernst Hoppe and Ida Marie Elisabeth Richter.
I obtained this certificate through the Berlin Archives. Also the birth certificate of my grandfather born in Berlin - tying up his parents and lots of lovely info about Carl Ernst and Ida Marie Elisabeth.

So first prize is to get the documents. This ofcourse was discovered through Ancestry.com - a cousin is a member and will do searches for me. I often wonder why Ancestry has the monopoly on many of these types of documents AND you have to pay.

Through Ancestry I also found the birth and baptismal records of 4 of Carl Ernst Hoppe's siblings. Parents are correct and dates fit. I am still searching for Carl's record.

These records were found in -"Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages and Burials 1518-1921". They seem to be available in Family Search. But not being able to read German is a problem if you don't read or speak it.

This is just to illustrate how I overcame some of my obstacles and brickwalls. Wishing you all the luck in your research.
Regards
Charlette Louise Hoppe

Hi, thanks for these advices.

Have searched again ancestry and familyseach thru,no luck. I migh get copies of Pauline Hoffmanns and his sons Finnish Citizenship applications as as they were accepted as Finn in early 1920s. If I get these there might be some helpful information (not know what info there is in those applications, if I get Paulines birth place that would be good).

So still looking for any help to trace these people.
Seems to be very difficult to research German origins....In Finland its so much easier to trace people.

If the records are indexed they are fairly easy to find, provided you experiment with spelling of names. Spelling of names for example in the 17th or 18th century will differ from today's spelling or the indexer may not correctly interpret the handwriting. This can cause havoc with a search.
I have found that often one has to simply trawl the un-indexed records for yourself. This can be pretty successful.
