As I recall, there is a whole lot of confusion about the families of men named James Butler and parents there-of. There is this Williams Thomas's son, who is noted as going from Virginia to Hart County, Kentucky, vs. this James Butler (James Butler, VA -> SC), noted as going from Virginia to South Carolina along (apparently) with his father James Butler (Captain James Butler, I).
There seems to be much cross-mingling of the families, but it also seems clear that the descendants of those James-of-KY vs. James-of-SC are different. The mixups are around who their mother's may be (and they might have same first names?) , siblings, etc.
It is such a mixup that has apparently been around for years so that one can't readily depended on un-sourced online trees. More "primary" documentation is needed to help sort them out ... recognizing that these folks also precede the time when a lot of county records were burned near the end of the US Civil War, and thus may not be available.
