While William Chase 1595 and family are documented as passengers on the ‘Arabella’ of the Winthrop Fleet that left England from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight over the summer of 1630, it is currently uncertain where John and Mary were living prior to the time of immigration. Although there has been a great deal of “more-than-likely” speculation, it has seemed impossible to find records that connect him back into families of Chases living around Hundridge Manor, Chesham, Buckinghamshire. This may be about to change.

Recent information points to the identity of William Chase’s parents as, Benjamin Chase (14 Aug 1570 - 1643) and Helen Harvie 1570 living in Wivenhoe, Essex. Benjamin Chase was one of two children of William Chase 1553 and Mary Hammond 1550. In turn, William 1553, was one of eight children of Thomas Chase 1520 and Elizabeth Bowchiew 1518 at Hundridge, Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

The recent research work of Helen Barrell on historic marriage and baptism records at Wivenhoe St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church is now in publication. These documents show the marriage of Benjamyin Chase and Hellen Harvie on 18 Jan 1591 at Wivenhoe, near Colchester, England. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is located in the High Street and existed by 1254 when Simon Battle was the patron. These records are a trove of information that include baptism records of their three children: Anne 1591, William 1597, and George 1600. Baptism records can post date a birth by 1-2 years.

These records would place William at Wivenhoe, Essex. How long was he there? Where did he meet and marry Mary? What is Mary’s surname?

Note: Because of the relatively small numbers of New England colonists and their inter-relationships, there are numerous ways that Chase descendants might find connections to Chase families in Chesham. While there is a through-line between Gurley Brown Chase and William Chase 1595, also there are numerous alternate pathways following female ancestral routes.

Hello Erica

Well good friend, I hope you are well during this time, and out of harms way.

Presently with a little extra time on hand - I thought I might see what the next steps are for verifying William Chase 1595, his baptism/birth, and his parents (presumably Benjamin Chase - Helen Harvie) living in Wivenhoe, Essex, England in 1591. As you mentioned, we have needed to "Invite Feedback" for William Chase-Origins of William Chase. Perhaps this feedback has come to you? As I haven't seen any thus far, I wonder - what is the appropriate wait time? Are there any steps I can take to help this process along?

If the Wivenhoe parish records are substantial, which I presume they are, I would look forward to seeing the Profile details changed for both William and his family. If this happens, I suspect we will see a direct line between William 1595 and the earliest Chases at Hundridge, Chesham.

No feedback I’ve seen or can recall.

Do we have any scholarship - peer reviewed journal articles to quote? AmericanAncestors.org (NEHGR) and their blogs and journals would be more authoritative sources.

I've not seen any other publications than the St Mary Parish records. Marriage records for Benjamin Chase and Helen Harvie in 1591 are there in Wivenhoe. Benjamin was born 1570, Hundridge, Chesham. He was the son of William Chase (1553) Hundridge and Mary Hammond, and also Isabell Sam.

In 2004 Jeffery Chace became convinced that Wivenhoe was the most likely origin for William Chase. His ideas are in the link below. Yet now we have the St Mary Parish baptism records for William that bear this out.

There are a few other publications written in America that list the diverging Chase lineages. It has been convenient to bypass William 1595. I can't yet locate further references to Benjamin and Helen Harvie

How would you or anyone think of arranging the records into a tree?

I could try to do this. Three questions then . . . perhaps you have a better solution?
Question one: Do you suggest using the Geni 'Tree View', or some external webkit?

Question two: If it means working in Geni 'Tree View', then is it unlocked?

Question three: I keep my own records in Reunion. Following my own (theoretical) pathway, I can build Chase all the way back to Phillip Chase 1305, Chesham, Bucks. Should I start with Phillip 1305 and go forward . . . . or start with William 1595 and go backwards?

We have the Chesham pedigree already.

What you need is a couple of generations, stand alone, to perhaps link as a bridge.

There are so many Chases, and I’m concerned that we could just be re creating disproved errors.

Hopefully this will be sufficient for a bridge:

Here are the generations including Thomas Chase 1520; William Chase 1553; Benjamin 1570 and Hellen Harvie; William 1595 and Mary Chase, William 1621 and Elizabeth Holder.
