I am trying to establish the parentage of Maria Elisabetha Gertrude who married my ancestor, Hans Counrath Ehrenhardt. She was born in 1660 but records say that she was the daughter of Duke Frederick III who died in 1659. It is not making any sense since records seem to indicate that Maria's maiden name is Gertrude. Can you help me here?
Good luck with that. I have been working on this, off and on, for about 4 months. Hans Conrath is my 7th great grandfather. Someone, a long time ago, noted that Maria was the daughter of a van Sachsen and Fredrich Gottorf and listed her maiden name as Gertrude, which was ridiculous. There is no record of this van Sachsen and Gottorf having a daughter named Maria Elisabetha. It must be another Gottorf. Hundreds, if not thousands, accepted this and entered it into their family trees. I have seen it on Wikitree, Myheritage, Genie, Ancestry, FindaGrave but everybody I've talked to just said they copied it from other sources.. I have communicated with people in Germany who have this but after our exchanges realized this is incorrect. I can't imagine how many trees are wrong. My research so far has shown that her name is Maria Elisabetha Gertrude Gottorf, parents unknown. She was the first wife of Hans and bore him 6 children. His second wife was Maria Petronella Busein with whom he had 2 children. There is a little bit more history on her.
