Tabor Independent, Aug. 22, 1938; Obituary Synopsis for Mrs. Victor Becvar
Marie Kortan, daughter of Matt and Marie Kortan was born on the farm of her parents, south of Tabor, January 30 (?), 1882. On May 30, 1900 she married Victor Becvar. She had been suffering from rheumatism for several years and during the past few years dropsy developed.
She died Thursday, August 18, 1938, at 11:50 p.m. at the age of 56 years, 6 months and 19 days. The funeral was held Monday morning from the farm home and from the St. Wenceslaus church at 10:30 with burial in the adjoining cemetery. The pallbearers were nephews: David, Matt and Charles Kortan, Joseph Sykora, Andrew Becvar and Joseph Boska.
She is survived by her husband, one son, Victor of Idaho, and daughters Beatrice and Angela, at home. One child died in infancy. She is also survived by the children of her husband by his first marriage: Thomas of Tabor; Ludmila, wife of Frank Kadlec in Minnesota; Peter of near Tyndall; Paul, near Avon; Matt, on the old farm home; Christina, wife of John Kortan, near Utica; Hattie, wife of Emil Nikokym, Yankton; Marie (?), wife of John W. Kudrna of Tabor. The eldest son, Joseph, died about 30 years ago. She is also survived by three grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters: Frank M. Kortan, John Kortan, of Utica; and Vaclav M. Kortan of near Tabor; Mrs. Jos. Boska, and Mrs. Matt Becvar of near Tabor.
