Does anyone know what H.O.I.K stands for? I am researching a Norwegian ancestor called Frans Sommers who left Bergen, Norway late 1700s (he was a pharmacist) - he appears to have got off a ship in Cape Town as he was unwell and then apparently worked as a surgeon/doctor for HOIK - I can’t seem to find what that stands for? Thanks Sonja

Hollandse Oos-Indiese Kompanjie

Or as it was known in English as Dutch East India Company

It stands for Hereenigde oostindische Kompanje which is United East India Company. It should be VOIC these are the records that were sent back to Amsterdam about the Cape

Thank you very much! does anyone know where to access the Dutch East India company records - they appear on UNESCO list but it just says “various locations”

Hi, Sonja

Is the following the ancestor you are referring to?
Frans Jurgens (George) Sommers, SV/PROG

Yes that’s him - I tried contacting the person who loaded the book reference which claims he was a “surgeon” for HOIK. I managed to trace him at Norway end as a pharmacist.

If I'm not mistaken, a surgeon in those days had been those who had medical experience and could attend to the ill on the passenger ships that transported immigrants. Upon settling at the Cape of Good Hope, they continued to attend to sick settlers at the Cape. Prescibing, dispensing and administering medication; pulling teeth; attending to the sick; declaring someone deceased; and so forth could have constituded part of their responsibilities. It was, however, mostly the well-to-do at the time, who could afford the services of these "surgeons".

Anyone involved in this discussion is welcome to correct me relating the above.

Hi Clara. HOIK stands for Hollands Oos Indiese Kompanjie or translated in English “Dutch East Indian Company” who was responsible for trading spices from India to Europe. They had a stop over and food replenishing stop over at taday’s Cape Town.

I trust that this info will help you

Regards

Clara. If you can watch the movie”Krotoa”. It is available on Showmax.com. This will give you a good understanding of the early days of Cape Town.

@ Francois, thanks for reminding me to watch Krotoa. I've been wanting to for the longest time, but forgot all about it

@ Sonja, I thought that you might find it interesting to know that Jan van Riebeeck, too, was a surgeon.
