From James R. Sanders Jr.

Here is a link to an article about my Great-Gradmother, Docia Emma Rowland Gatlin, a descendant of Ursula Weatherford. She lived to be 103 years old.

. Here is my Wright Burleson family tree on ancestry:
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/73346371/family
Ursula Weatherford Burleson is my husband's 4th great-grandmother.
Ursula Weatherford is definitely Indian, as well as many of the families that were intermarried with the Weatherfords and Burlesons. The Vanns were all Cherokee.

Her brother is William 'Red Eagle" Weatherford, well-known and historically documented with the US government in Washington D.C., and with presidents. Check out what small amount of information I have listed here on my ancestry site:

Also, her sister, Agnes, was married to John "Cherokee" Vann, who was definitely Cherokee

If you check out the information by Belinda K Pierce, who recently died, you will find massive amounts of information on Burlesons and Weatherfords. She is most definitely one of the most knowledgeable experts on the Burleson family ever. She has over 900 pages on the Burleson website alone about Burlesons and Weatherfords. It is not easy to navigate, because it does not have a search option, but she has tons of interesting information on the individuals as well as just names and dates. If I remember right, my mother-in-law, Ruth Burleson, is found on about page 646. Here's Belinda's web site (thank goodness no one has taken it down!):

This is another one of Belinda's sites. Check the pictures listed at the bottom. Also, more information on Red Eagle Weatherford: "If you are searching for information on Red Eagle, Lynn Hastie has written a wonderful book called William Weatherford His Country and His People. Her book is in hardback and would make a wonderful book in your genealogy collection for any Weatherford researcher. To order a copy of her book just scroll down to my links and click."

Here is a copy of a newspaper article of Red Eagle William Weatherford's great-great-granddaughter, Eunice Weatherford. It has a lot of sources listed.

And notes from James R. Sanders Jr.

Ursula's father was Wilkerson Weatherford born c1726, the son of William Weatherford and Susanna Wilkerson. Wilkerson's brother Martin Weatherford born c1729, was the father of Charles Weatherford, born c1752, who was the father of William "Red Eagle" Weatherford. Chief Red Eagle was NOT the brother of Ursula Weatherford Burleson, but would be a cousin. This has always been my understanding from what I have found.

have read before in researching Cherokee genealogy that part of the problem is the relationship structure of the Cherokees. The children always stayed with the mother. Cherokees were completely non-racists. They intermarried with Scotch, Irish, black, spanish, english and other indians without any regard to race. There is a website for African-NativeAmerican:
http://www.african-nativeamerican.com/
I'll post the information for this as soon as I have time to fine it. In the meantime please check out cherokeebyblood.com

This website is by a professional genealogist named David Vann. We share a common ancestor Joe Vann. The Vann families were intermarried with the Weatherfords and Burlesons.

"My name is David Vann, great-great-great grandson of ‘Chief’ Rich Joe Vann of the Old Cherokee Nation. I am a Charter Lifetime Member of the Cherokee National Historical Society’s, First Families of the Cherokee Nation and member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG). However, I am not a carded member of any Cherokee tribe nor I am affiliated with the Cherokee Nation or the Eastern Tribe. The purpose of this page is to help other people connect to their Cherokee roots. To aid in this task, I have included Native American ancient and modern history, society, religion, folklore, medicine, and a large slice of VANN genealogy on this page. For pictures and information about my ancestors, please go to my pictures page.

This saga began in 1907, when my great grandmother Sarah Vann applied for admission to the Miller Roll. In the 1930’s, my grandfather Joseph Daniel Vann wrote letters to the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma, seeking his ancestry. In the late 1950’s my father Joseph Harold Vann, hired professional genealogists to construct a family tree. This project was a failure, so my father also wrote letters to the Cherokee Nation. In the mid 1970’s I picked up the family "torch" and began my research where the others had left off. On this Genealogy section you will see the fruits of nearly a century of loving labor. Research your Vann ancestors here, I have nearly all of them from about 1600 to 1906."

I have a question about Jean Baptiste Marchand. My 2 great grand mother was a Merchant. Sometimes it was spelled Marchant. Do you think that he Marchand and Marchant is the same family. Ursula Weatherford was my several great grand mother. He was ancestor of Chief Red Eagle.
