I have some German in-laws who want to follow up on their side of the Family with DNA testing. Are there some differences in the information available for them because they live in the EU ? Should they just wait until they are here in the US for the summer to do their tests?

Some companies (I do not know which) will not ship to certain areas and I have learned that commercial/consumer DNA testing is actually illegal in some countries and I know that your question is for Geni but I wanted to share what I have learned.

It is important to be in contact with the actual company that would be doing the DNA test analysis--many have CHAT and toll free phone numbers.

Thanks for the reply Cynthia. I have done FTDNA, LIVINGDNA and Ancestry. My Bavarian born wife did FT and Living.
I remember back when I tried to order Heritage and they would not send a kit to Alaska for some bizarre reason. Like we are an unlisted country...
I thought I remembered reading someplace where certain info was not available to EU members because of some strange regulation.
So I was almost thinking about 3rd party mailing tests from here...
We shall see. My wife's side of the family only has one person who may consider doing it. The rest of them all act like they have a
big secret to hide.

lol Yeah...lots of secrets and DNA doesn't care

Good luck Alexander Clark!
It certainly is an adventure

I believe France, Israel, and Alaska are places where there are (or were) legal problems / issues with doing DNA Testing - never sure of exact details.
But am quite sure it is not the whole EU that is a problem.

On the other hand - a kit order from FTDNA includes free return postage within the US, if ordered for outside the US, it does not - so possibly if everything else is equal, is easier to do when they are in the US.

Yes, in France, buying a DNA test can cost you a €3750 fine.

It did however read some weeks ago that they probably will allow DNA tests for genealogy.
