* died 21 October 1835
* father Richard Hambly (born 1694 died June 1762)

Hi,
If no-one can provide any evidence that links William Hambly from the first fleet to these parents I will disconnect him from them.
Leanne

William Hambly, Crew "Sirius" 1788 is your ex-partner's fourth great grandfather. (my sons father)

Other than having the same name, what evidence ties them together?

Australian records has his birthdate c1763 based on his age when joined the crew and his death date. No record for the crew member (that I am aware of) lists his date of birth, his place of birth or his parents.

I had a family book for a while from Ken, the family has been very well researched. I did not get to do anything with the book by the short time he lent it to me. It was very confusing visually, the way it was set out. I can ask him to see that page. He has a Plantagenet ancestry that I daubt at the moment, and when my new books arrive I will check that also. Someone merged the profile I put up with an illustrious one LOL

Only marriages Richard and Elizabeth:

1739 Lanreath Richard HAMBLY Elizabeth SPRIDELL
1751 Clement, St. Richard HAMBLY Eliz. TRISTREAL (TRESTRILL)
1751 Clement, St. Richd. HAMBLY Eliz: TRISTREAL

So I think this one is correct!

What I tend to find for the earlier convicts that in most cases there is no record of the family either at the trial or after they came to Australia and a lot of times we just have an estimate of an age at conviction and as you know spelling was very fluid and literacy rates were very low so very few family diaries exist.

Unfortunately lots of people don't like a vacuum so will find a possible family and connect them and then everyone across the internet copies that. Not usually a problem until 1) you find the real child still living in the UK or 2) the dates make it impossible 3) dna disproves it or 4) someone comes to a different conclusion.

My queries are
1) what evidence is there for a birth date of 21/8/1763
2) why would there be brothers with the same names - 3 x Richard (2 alive at the same time) and 3 x William (2 alive at the same time)
3) if the father died in June 1762, how could he have fathered children born August 1763, 1764 and 1776

I think 2 marriages are of different Richards, I looked at that a while ago. It is hard when everyone on my heritage has them combined, probably from here.

If you look at the adder who is now left the site, the revisions tab, I think this has had a lot of trials, merges and claimants.

I had Kens DNA tested so If you have someone proven from here I can check if he also matches. I think I was trying to get his tree done for his 80th birthday, but really not my area.

Do what you think here, possibly David and Ben have a backup of their work on this.

As you know I am no expert on convicts and you are :)

Do you know if he was from Truro at least?

William Hambly was aged 23 from Truro Cornwall, when he joined as a ship’s carpenter and crew member on Sirius. In Sydney Cove William worked as a carpenter from the end of January 1788 until March 1790 when the Sirius departed for Norfolk Island. Also on the same voyage was Mary Springham and their child William.

William continued working as a carpenter and gardener on the Island, until he decided to stay and become a settler. He was discharged as a Sirius crew member in March 1791. By the April he held a lease of 60 acres. By mid June 1794 Mary and William had three children, and he was selling grain to the government. On 18 June 1796 Mary died, leaving son William and daughter Elizabeth; the other child had previously died. As a first class settler William departed the Island with his children in 1807 on Porpoise for Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania).

William took up land at Gloucester and Risdon Clarence Plains, and in 1810 he married Jane Meech, widow of William Moulton in Hobart. His son William died in April 1817 unmarried, leaving Elizabeth as Mary and William’s only surviving child. William Hambly, age given as 73, died and was buried at Sorrell Tasmania on 22 October 1835.

So he was born between Join (1787 - 23 = 1764) and burr (1835-73 = 1762) date.

1760 Truro, St. Mary William HAMBLY Richard Elizabeth
1762 Pelynt William HAMBLY Peter Elizabeth
1762 Mawgan in Pydar William HAMBLEY Emanual Jane
1762 Germans, St. William HAMBLY Robert Mary
1763 Duloe William HAMBLY Philip Mary
1764 Morval William HAMBLY William Ann
1764 Morval William HAMBLY William Ann
1765 Duloe William HAMBLY William Jane
1765 Poundstock William HAMBLEY William Mary

This would be Richard who married Elizabeth Tristreal

Where did you get that bio please? I would like to reference it.

Hi,
I will add some references into his profile.

Being from Truro at age 23 doesn’t prove that he was born in Truro.

Leanne

No of course not, this is why I added all the possibilities from that resource.

I added a few links into his profile.
