Joseph Surette was born in 1740 or 1745 in Les Mines (grand pre), fifth son of Pierre II Surette and Catherine Breau.

Feb 1756- Prisoners were fed on horsemeat and at the request of Pierre II Surette (father), they saved some of the rib bones which they used, during nights, to dig a tunnel under the wall of the fort in February 1756.

1759- After two years of starvation, seven hundred Acadians came out of the woods in New Brunswick. By 1759, they had joined other Acadian refugees at Miramichi, on the Gulf of St. Lawrence shore. There, they suffered almost as much as they had done in the woods

1760-Pierre II rejoined the resistance movement, at Restigouche on the Baie des Chaleurs. After a British force captured Restigouche in the summer of 1760, Pierre II and his family were sent to a prison compound in Nova Scotia

He married Marguerite Blanche Pellerin, the daughter of Alexandre Pellerin and Jeanne Gaudet, about 1762.

After the Treaty of Paris in 1763 he was released from a prison in Halifax. The marriage was rehabilitated in Chezzetcook on June 4, 1769. Around 1769, the family of Pierre Surette along with Bourques, Babins, Boudreaus and others came to Yarmouth County. Joseph and Marguerite settled in Sainte-Anne-du-Ruisseau. He died before July 21, 1799, when his wife was listed as a widow on Celeste Amirault's baptismal record.
