He had children born both in the UK and USA around the same time and children with the same names were alive at the same time.

Can anyone add any information on this family?

Hello Private User.

I found Beriah Smith in the DAR database and added his information. He was born in 1745 in Massachusetts. Beriah Smith

No confusion to me on this line of John Smiths. They were my grandfathers. Deacon John Smith, Sr. (1661-1727) and his son John Smith, Jr. (1684-1761), both of Hadley,, Hampshire County, MA.. I grew up 15 miles from where they lived and have visited their graves. I.know the line well. They are buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery n Hadley. John Sr. was the son of Philip Smith (1632-1685) and Elizabeth Foote Smith. He was married to Joanna Kellogg, daughter of Joseph Kellogg and Joanna Kellogg, Sr.., also of Hadley. John Smith, Jr. was married to Esther Colton, daughter of Ephraim and Esther Marshfield Colton of Longmeadow, MA. Their son was Silas Smith, Sr (1722-1809, m. Sarah Preston); Silas Smith, Jr. (1754-1813, m. Asenath Chapin); Hiram Smith, Sr. (1793-1873, m. Mary Moody); Hiram Smith, Jr. (1824-1890, m.Harriet Sophia Coney); Fred Merwin Smith (1862-1928, m. Evelyn Bardwell); Lincoln Bardwell Smith (1895-1977, m. Cornelia Dorcas Gill); and then me, Virginia Smith Alexander. (1934-, m. Sigmund Alexander). The progenitor of the family was Lt. Samuel Smith (1602-1680) and his wife Elizabeth Smith Smith (1602-16886). They came to the Colonies in 1634; settled first in Wethersfield, CT, and in 1659 moved up the Connecticut River and settled Hadley, MA Bay. --- Virginia Smith Alexander

Virginia, how do you explain him having children born in the UK and in the USA at the same time?

My John Smith of Hadley, MA), Jr or Sr, didn't have children in UK. No need for me to explain. Whoever that John Smith was, he wasn't in my line. No confusion on my part. See Sylvester Judd's "History of Hadley.", page 126. Remember, I grew up with this line. With a name like John Smith, how many thousands of others with the same name can it be? You need to switch to another family and line.

Hi,
This isn’t my line - I just noticed the discrepancies and am trying to fix it.

Could you please tell which of his children correctly belong to him so that I can detach the ones that don’t belong.

Leanne

I agree. With all the John Smiths in the world, they have become co-mingled. The Judd book is a wonderful and widely accepted reference for the folks in the Hadley/Hatfield area of western Massachusetts. When I was growing up there I didn't realize (nor care) what a genealogy gold mine it was! Samuel (the progenitor), Philip, John, Sr and John, Jr. (with their wives), are all buried in the Old Hadley Cemetery in Hadley. (See Find-a-Grave.) John Smith Jr's son Silas, Sr down through my parents are all buried in Evergreen Cemetery in South Hadley, about 8 miles apart. All are on the beautiful Connecticut River.
