No son called David listed at Wikipedia.

Argyll married Lady Margaret Douglas, second daughter of William Douglas, 7th Earl of Morton, with whom he had two sons, the eldest of whom, Archibald, succeeded him as the 9th Earl,[11] and four daughters.[6]

The William twin is who the smart match is sung is David Campbell.

Your question, I think, might be rephrased as “what is the evidence supporting Archibald as father of David Campbell, Cooper, who died in Perth Amboy NJ?”

So far, there’s a submitted pedigree (the equivalent of “someone says so.”). Versus multiple published sources saying Archibald had 2 sons, Archibald & Neil.

Personally I do not see that David’s parents have yet been identified. This study looks pretty thorough:
