His son and heir was Nicholas (given incorrectly here as his grandson).

Nicholas Denman, Esq. of East Retford

Can you write out his mother & father at the top of the “about” ?

Morning, Erica Howton. My sources give John Denman, Esq. (d.1517) and Isabel Mountney (d.1515) as the parents of Nicholas Denman.

I'm leaving earlier than usual this morning, so after I write that in for you on Nicholas's profile, I'll have to finish things up this evening.

I should point out though, that while Nicholas's father apparently was confused with the facts for John Dunham, Esq. -- we may not need to move or merge anything after all.

Just have to make corrections on the dates and add some sources. I apologize, as I probably could have done all or most of that on my own.

It turns out that according to Edwin Wilmhurst, Nicholas's father and also grandfather were named John Denman.

"In the reign of King Edward I. (1292-1307), a Knighted family of Denman, bore, as arms, "Three Lions Heads, erased Gules," and about that date Thomas Denman, and William Wentworth, of Wentworth-Woodhouse (relatives), each held a moiety of Land and Tenements at Tinslow (now Tinsley, near Sheffield), which they both inherited from "William of Tynneslowe," whose great-great-grand-daughter Joane Bolynbrook, was also grand-daughter of "That Great Man of Retford" John Atte Vicars, who, about 1434, gave lands to the Bailiffs of East Retford, for the endowment of the Chantries in the Church of S. Swithun; and this Joane married unto William Denman, Armiger, of Retford, by whom she had one son, "John of Tinslowe." He, also, had one son, Thomas Denman, who married Isabella, daughter of Hugh Hercy, of Grove, whose son, John, in 1584, at "Glover's Visitation at York," proved his descent, and his right to the arms " Three Lions Heads, erased Gules." He was buried in East Retford Church, and his stone is recorded by Piercy, as "much defaced." He was succeeded by his son, also John of Retford, who was the father of Nicholas, "of Est Retforde, Esquyer," whose first wife was Isabella, daughter of Roger Eyre; and whose second wife was Anne, seventh daughter of Humphrey Hercy, of Grove, and sister of Sir John Hercy, who brought unto the Denman's the Manor of West Retford. Now this Nicholas and Anne Denman, nee Hercy, had four sons—"

(I'm descended from Nicholas's son Thomas Denman of Ordsall. The only other son with issue was Rev. Francis Denman, the ancestor of Anne Hyde.)

So, the line looks like this to me:

William Denman, Knight of Retford m. Joane Bolynbrook (ca.1450)

John of Tinslowe

Thomas Denman m. Isabel Hercy of Grove

John Denman -- "John, in 1584, at "Glover's Visitation at York," proved his descent, and his right to the arms " Three Lions Heads, erased Gules." He was buried in East Retford Church, and his stone is recorded by Piercy, as "much defaced."

John of Retford -- "father of Nicholas Denman, Esq. of East Retford" said to have married Isabel Mountney, according to other sources. This man died in 1517, when Nicholas was around 30 years old.

Nicholas Denman, Esq. m. (First) Isabella Eyre; (Second) Anne Hercy of Grove

Thomas Denman of Ordsall m. Elizabeth (Unknown)

The wrong dates on Nicholas's father and the right dates being on his grandfather instead, had me thinking that particular John Denman profile didn't belong there, but it looks like I was mistaken about that. The dates confused me. I apologize for that.

Tonight I plan to take a really close look at the whole Denman paternal line. Thank you for helping me with this. I apologize for the way I do things. /\
