I believe Hannah Fugate (d/o Martin Devers Fugate Sr. & Mary Wells, was married ONLY to James Ritchie, s/o Alexander Crockett Ritchie & Susan Elizabeth Grigsby. The purported marriage to John McDaniels I believe is a mistake, perhaps from so many mergings of profiles for Hannah. I have another Hannah Fugate (d/o Jonathan Fugate & Leticia Wells) who married John McDaniel (s/o George), with a possible marriage date of 8 Nov 1826. Hannah and John had a number of children in the 1830s and 1840s, at the same time that Hannah Fugate & husband James Ritchie were having children. They obviously cannot be the same woman.

1880 Breathitt Census
26. RICHIE
James 74 VVN [swelling in legs]
Hannah 69 KVSc (Fugate)
John 31 (son) (single)
****married at age 69 to James Ritchie was born 12/10/1911 in Clay County KY (could have been in the same area that later became Breathitt or Perry Co, KY)

Notes:
Hannah Fugate b. 1801 TN

Although I know that the "annotated" census' and the recreated marriage records say that Hannah Fugate is the one who married John McDaniel in 1826 in Perry Co., I read the 1850 Breathitt Co. census differently. The census lists, in this order:
John McDaniel, 60, VA;
HANNAH FUGATE, 49, TN;
Alfred ", 7;
Celia McDaniel, 24;
then the rest of the McDaniel children (marked by ") down through age 11, 9, 7 and 4.

The census-takers were not in the business of recording the maiden names of women, and they had strict instructions about the order they should list the names. This record states that "Hannah Fugate" and her apparent son, Alfred, were living in the household of John McDaniel. There were also several McDaniel children in the household. Properly, Hannah and Alfred should come at the end of this list. But also properly, her name should have been "McDaniel" if she had been his wife for nearly 25 years. She was probably his housekeeper. This Alfred Fugate, age 17, appears in the 1860 census of Breathitt Co., in the household of Jesse Fugate, 38, and his wife Clarinda. This household also contained Letty Fugate, widow of Jonathan.

Although I don't know for sure who Hannah, b. 1801, was, I think it is possible that she was the widow of one of Jonathan's sons, or that she was an unmarried daughter of Jonathan.

She could be the "Hannah Fugit, 47, widow, b. Clay Co. KY" who married "Levi Fugate, 57, wid, b. Russell Co. VA" in Perry Co. in 1852. That Hannah is also an unknown entity.

If you find good documentation that Hannah was indeed married to John McDaniel - her name on a death record of her child or some such original record - I'd appreciate hearing about it. Unfortunately, the clerk of Perry Co didn't bother to record the names of the brides in the early records. For more info, e-mail me: mdfugate@aol.com

1850 Breathitt Co.,Ky. census lists John McDaniel, 60, M, Farmer, born in Virginia and cannot read nor write. The census lists Hannah Fugate in the household, age 49, F, born in Tn.

Online Knott Co.,Ky. marriage records show John McDaniel and Hannah Fugate married 11/08/1826. John was married first to a woman who it is said was full-blooded Indian but it is not known who she was.

The 1850 census shows children:
Celia at age 24,
Polly at age 18,
Vasa at age 16,
Thomas at age 14,
Wiley at age 13,
Shadrack at age 11,
Mary at age 9,
Matilda at age 7 and
Lucy at age 4.

There is also another child shown as Alfred, age 7, but is listed right under Hannah Fugate indicating that his name would be Fugate and not McDaniel. An email from Molly Chapman Arvai confirms that Hannah Fugate was the mother of Celia, Polly and Vasa. She obtained this information from the grand-daughter of Vasa before she died. The granddaughter was named Molly. Since the other children were born later than Celia, Polly and Vasa, it is assumed that Hannah Fugate was also their mother.

11 Aug 1826
Perry, Kentucky, United States
According to Perry Co., KY marriage book A, page 14 (Perry Co., KY Genealogical and Historical Society):On 11 August 1826 John McDaniel was married. It was performed by John Haddix. The bride was not listed. The brides were rarely listed in the early book

These several of the Hannah Fugate I have in my genealogy files who could be wife of John McDaniel... I lean towards the Hannah who was also married to James Smith and Levi Fugate.... the dates fit better.

I descend from 3 of Jonathan and Letties children: Mary Polly Fugate Clemons (Benjamin), Martha Patsy Fugate Miller (John Cockrum Miller) and Jesse Fugate (Clarinda Bradley)... and still live in the county that they lived in....

Can you add anything to this?

  • Hannah’s date of marriage to McDaniel and Fugate are the same date
  • Hannah had 1 child to McDaniel in the middle of many children to Fugate

I think Hannah Fugate born 1801 married to McDaniel is a different Hannah born 1811 thatmarried Fugate

The Hannah Fugate with son Alfred in the 1850 census was a housekeeper or lodger / relative ? To John McDaniel, not his wife. So in 1850 John McDaniel did not have a wife, Fugate or otherwise. Since he died before the 1860 census with possibly minor children (not Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Ratliff she married in 1859), who they were living with then are a clue.

I’m suspicious of the Aug 11, 1826 record of him marrying Hannah Fugit.

There were, of course, many Hannah Fugates in this time & place. I’m not sure Pat Caudill mentioned all the possible widows.

I think that Hannah Ritchie needs to be detached from

Agree.

John McDaniels wife could be the one Dona Ritchie mentioned in https://www.geni.com/discussions/205454?msg=1351001

This one

Hannah Smith

She’s over here also with a possible wrong death date Hannah Fugate

9/3/2023 at 9:41 PM

This John McDaniel does not have the father mentioned above (son of George)

Hannah Fugate incorrect death date could be the result of a reversed merge data bleed

9/3/2023 at 10:09 PM

Easily could be so, or a mixup with a different Hannah. Need to double check census reports.

I resolved data conflicts for James "Big Jim" Monroe Ritchie and learned he’s related to the well known folk singer, Jean Ritichie.

Hannah Fugate McDaniel

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/170385666/hannah-mcdaniel

1st married unknown Fugate, and mother of Alfred Fugage born in 1843 Ky and 2nd wife of John McDaniel married in Perry County Kentucky on 11/08/1826 and step- mother to the McDaniel children of John

If that’s the case, i think we should not show Hannah Smith with parents and any child but Alfred.

Here’s the John McDaniel with wife of John McDaniel and Hannah Fugate referenced on profile.

It does not seem there’s proof he married a Fugate at all.
