James Burns Burnes

Billie

Billie.

You have James Burns dying in 1716 but he had at least six children who were born during the period 1739-58.

Neil

Billie

Are you sure that you have the right man? One of the sources cited for his putative son James Burns says this:

His name is James Burns and general consensus is that he was born around 1744 in County Roscommon, Ireland, though no one seems to have any proof of that. From the 1760s on down, I have the family pretty well nailed down.

Another of the sources cited seems to agree.

Neil

Neil,
The sources say Ireland but found him in Scotland records with parents James and Janet Tennie. Family search had records ect. So think some made mistake or couldn’t find him.

Billie

Billie,

I have found ten baptismal records for children named James Burns, or James Burnes, who were born in Scotland between 1741 and 1744. What was it that led you to believe that it was Janet Tassie's son you were looking for?

Neil

Neil,
I was looking into the Deitz name of sons Wife and in some instances the Janet Tassie name was mentioned. And the Person on Ancestery and family search had references to Massacre at Fort Donnally that gave me clue he was Scottish instead of Irish.

Billie

Billie,

I would suggest to you that it may not be possible to identify the ancestry of your ancestor, James Burns. Certainly, you cannot expect to identify a baptismal record for him without first identifying the names of his parents from another source.

Dr. David Dobson has produced a number of books that list the names of Scots who settled in Colonial America. For example:

1

https://play.google.com/store/books/details/Directory_of_Scots_Bani...

2

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4218606-scots-on-the-chesapeake...

If you can find these or one of the many other books produced by him in your local library (or genealogy research centre) they might be of considerable help.
Neil

Neil,
This one reason I posting here we can seperate them if needed. The parents I have enough information on him. I thinking he’s Scottish though instead of Irish. He wouldn’t be the first with same mistake. And since granddaughter was put in with correct parents. It been help. Thank you DNA least going back not further then was. And since James Burns or Burnes and Jane Deitz was at Donnolly Fort Massacre and DNA hits showing them associated and spoke to others in that line the Jane Deitz is mother to Margaret Burns. Just checking the alternative spelling out found in records. I am looking at this family and tearing everything appart to find truth here. I will check your resources out too. I just learning old country researching . Seems like when I do anything out USA it becomes difficult so will have to learn foreign researching.
