The gravestone of this Christopher Atte Wood died Sowerby Bridge,Yorks in 1525 says he was born Sanderstead, Surrey -see findagrave website for details, so he could more than likely be the son of Sir John Atte Wood.

I descend from a Yorkshire Wood family that lived in Slaithwaite in 19th century, and like you,my Dad said that there would be no link to Att Woods in Surrey becasue of variance in surname and distance apart, but I have found though DNA testing that I am linked by DNA to Att Wood trees in Staffordshire and Warwickshire and located close to Dudley Castle in 17th century. But have no connections to any Wood family trees on Ancestry in Yorkshire by DNA until 18th century, which makes me beleive that my line of Woods came to Yorkshire from West Midlands. And of the Wood and AttWood trees that I am connected to which are located in West Midlands 6 of them claim to be descended from Sir John Atte Wood (1400-1459) of Sanderstead, Surrey and several of these married into the Sutton family of Dudley castle.
Why they would move from Staffordshire to West Yorkshire, Iam not sure.

I am still working to verify that Christopher Wood is in fact my ancestor. I can only find an actual paper trail to my 5x ggp in the 1790's. After that, the trail to Christopher is based on a couple of people who state that the line is "well researched and published". That may be, but everytime I ask for documentation, there is nothing forthcoming. The original researcher who published the lineage may have that proof, but I don't see it.....yet. I'm ever hopeful that it's out there somewhere. ~Barbara Wood

Hi both

Based on family records I am able with reasonable confidence to trace back my father's family to Christopher Wood. I have signed up for a MyfamilyDNA BigY700 test, which will help. However I know from a more modest Y chromosome test that my my haplogroup is I1, and my haplotype is I-Z2040 which is the same as Edmund Wood's male line, who emigrated to the US, and is also strongly Scandinavian, which does not suggest a Surrey / Norman origin. Plus there were de Bosco's and deWodes living around Sowerby from way back. Anyway, time will tell. I will let you know results...
