Yes, there is a lot of "junk information" out there. I've been seeking my correct Joseph Hawkins for ages now. I thought I finally had two solid leads, but the more I'm looking at the alleged research that was posted online with a 'tree' of sorts, or at least a graph, the more it's starting to fall apart in my eyes.
It has been accepted that the parents of my Joseph Hawkins said to have been born in 1712, in Virginia, were John Hawkins (1680-1727) and his wife Mary Long. This couple did, indeed, have a surviving son by that name, but he deceased eighteen months prior to mine, and in Spotsylvania, VA, whereas mine deceased in Frederick County, near Mount Jackson. They are NOT the same man, clearly.
As for him being born in Maryland, that is a possibility, but I haven't been able to comfortably conclude just which of the Joseph Hawkinses is mine, nor to verify that he removed to Virginia. Just showing land deeds for a Joseph Hawkins isn't enough. What's to say he isn't of a Hawkins branch unrelated to others? We need to ask the right questions.
