Has anyone researched his parents? There is no way to add them and that makes this line a dead end.

“The exact parents and grandparents of Philemon Hawkins have yet to be determined. There's no documented link between him and John Henry Hawkins and Mary Dewe.”

Ok Thanks. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

I'm in Rhineland, Germany now, where the biggest single cluster of circles from my DNA test appeared. Far from the computer with all the data. But I seemto remember reading that one Hawkins and his wife (Hester Edwards I believe) had 14 kids. I figured that Philemon, and brother John, (my ancestor) descended from one of those kids, just not the one who married Mary Dewe.

(John Hawkins = dad's side, the Germans are from mom's side)

There's a lot of "junk information" out there about the various Hawkins families (they are legion), mainly because everyone wants *their* Hawkinses to connect to the Famous Admirals.

Most do not.

Yes, there is a lot of "junk information" out there. I've been seeking my correct Joseph Hawkins for ages now. I thought I finally had two solid leads, but the more I'm looking at the alleged research that was posted online with a 'tree' of sorts, or at least a graph, the more it's starting to fall apart in my eyes.

It has been accepted that the parents of my Joseph Hawkins said to have been born in 1712, in Virginia, were John Hawkins (1680-1727) and his wife Mary Long. This couple did, indeed, have a surviving son by that name, but he deceased eighteen months prior to mine, and in Spotsylvania, VA, whereas mine deceased in Frederick County, near Mount Jackson. They are NOT the same man, clearly.

As for him being born in Maryland, that is a possibility, but I haven't been able to comfortably conclude just which of the Joseph Hawkinses is mine, nor to verify that he removed to Virginia. Just showing land deeds for a Joseph Hawkins isn't enough. What's to say he isn't of a Hawkins branch unrelated to others? We need to ask the right questions.

My motto: Challenge Everything.

Mount Jackson is now in Shenandoah County, VA, which split off from Frederick County inn 1772. I have heard that the town of Edinburg, just north of Mount Jackson, has a fairly good Archives which may or may not contain some leads.

Private User I hear what you're saying. My Joseph deceased in 1770, so it was still Frederick County according to your information. :) I don't live in Virginia, so I'll have to find a way to access said Archives, possibly online.

I need to find the branch from Virginia, as one published work suggests that the Hawkins out of Maryland weren't related to the ones In Virginia. That's the first bit that blows up the supposition that one of the Joseph Hawkinses from Maryland moved there. It's quite the conundrum.
