I am currently researching my mother’s genealogy and came across this profile. If you follow the link to WikiTree and look at the documentary evidence on Ancestry as well as the published sources then you’ll see that the wife of Matthew Beckwith was named Mary but her surname is still not known. There’s no source that definitively connects her as a daughter of Enoch Lynde and Elizabeth Digby. I’m wondering if they should be listed here as her parents. Although I wish they were! It appears that the Charlemagne websites and all the lists of Gateway ancestors does list Simon (Symon) Lynde as a documented Gateway but there’s no “Mary Lynde” listed. So just wondering if this should be removed or if it should be marked as “possible”.

Why don't we mark it with possible,or not verified, not sure right now where I found it,but Iwill check it.Thanks for info.Minetta

Thank you. I have seen comments on several sites such as Family Search that this was a bogus connection. If you should find out differently please let me know! I would love it to be true as I’m still looking for a Charlemagne connection on my mom’s side. There is a Simon Lynde listed as Gateway Ancestor however there’s no Mary Lynde listed so I’m kinda thinking that it was made up sometime in the past. 😢

I am still searching, but I guess I am looking in all of the wrong places.
I will let you know if I find anything

OK- Here's what I have found- Torry's Second Supplement of New England Marriages shows Matthew Beckwith Sr. married one wife named Mary- surname unknown and it was uncommon to have middle names- so I am pretty sure she didn't have a middle name Elizabeth. His son Matthew Beckwith II married two women both named Elizabeth. The first book did show Matthew Sr. married ? Mary ? Elizabeth and ? Lynde- however no record has ever been found to substantiate anything other than her first name Mary___ and that is all that's documented on her as she was executor of his will. Actually the previous family genealogies on the origins of this family including Matthew Sr. and Mary were written by a Paul Beckwith- and have now been thoroughly researched and debunked. Matthew Sr.'s parents are still unknown and so are Mary's... Paul Beckwith fabricated lineage in England that was completely false.

Hi,in my Geni Tree-Matthew Beckwith (my 9th Gr.Grandfather married Mary Elizabeth Lynde Born;1625 in New London CT.dgt;of Enoch Lynde and Elizabeth Digby.Curator:Angus Wood-Salomon,and besides myself there are 44 people managing the line.
Now in this Lynde line;Robert I King of France-King Bernard of Lombardy:Pepin Carloman-King of Italy-Charlamagne-Pepin III King of Franks(now Germany)-Henry I King of Germany,-Henry III,King of England,-John I Lackland King of England.Henry II King of England.-Fulk V King of Jeruslem.
Hope this helps,Have fun. Netta Brown

So Netta.- are you aware of the questions posed about the Paul Beckwith books? He wrote them back in the 1950’s and supposedly didn’t really do the research as far as finding birth or baptism records and documenting them. So you’re basically saying that what is current on Geni is the acceptable lineage for Matthew Beckwith? I’m fine with that if you are!! Not wanting to step on toes here! 😂

I guess my real question here is this- Simon Lynde IS on the list of Gateway ancestors- however Mary (? Lynde) is NOT listed as a documented Gateway ancestor. The LDS site and WikiTree have the following notes regarding the Beckwith History and subsequent publications:
This man's family has been the subject of multiple genealogical publications that contained serious errors. The Beckwiths (1891) by Paul Beckwith, and History of New London (1895) by Frances Caulkins are not reliable genealogies. Gen. Simeon M. Fox shows in detail the errors, with corrections, where books such as these and The Beckwith Genealogy and Beckwith Notes ascribe unfounded connections to noble lineages in England, and muddle the vital facts of New England families. There are many points of data conflict between these three publications and subsequent work by Fox, Dean Crawford Smith, and others.

The parents Thomas Beckwith and Anne Dynley previously attached to this profile were removed because evidence is lacking that they are related to this person.
The Beckwiths, by Paul Edmond Beckwith, identified Lyme, Connecticut, settler Mathew Beckwith as the son of Marmaduke Beckwith, a member of the English landed gentry, and his first wife, Anne Dynly. According to Paul Beckwith's account, Mathew was born in Pontefract, Yorkshire England, September 22, 1610, and emigrated to New England in 1635. [1] There is no known basis for this account of his origins. No records or other sources were cited as a basis for this identification, and analysis has found that Paul Beckwith's work was filled with fabrications.

According to The Great Migration Directory: Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640, the parents and origins of this person are not known.[2] Anderson cites Angell Ancestry 222-30 which discusses clues to his origin in detail.

Paul Beckwith identified Matthew Beckwith's wife as Elizabeth (“at his death he left a wife Elizabeth”[23]), but Fox and Smith both cited records that show the name of his wife and widow as Mary. Her maiden name is not recorded.[24][25] Matthew and Mary Beckwith were probably married by about 1643.[26]
