James and caroline married in new south wales in 1853. It is highly unlikely that he would appear in the 1861 census of England.

I agree, I've deleted the reference.

I do know that some of the records were copied and archived in England, however the data alongside the now deleted reference was incorrect for the named person.

I also discovered the following which I found interesting..

Censuses of New South Wales - 1846 onwards
Censuses were held on 2 March 1846, 1 March 1851, 1 March 1856, 7 April 1861, 2 April 1871 and 3 April 1881 but have not survived, except in abstracted form. A census taken on 5 April 1891, and the collectors' books survive, but they provide the name of the head of household, but no other detail at individual level.
