I bet everyone on Geni is here because you are "the family historian," the one that would listen to stories, the one that searched through Aunt Fannie's attic for the books and photos. That is why I am here. I have no children, but I love my family. My extended family needs to know what I know and more. Geni has given me a whole side of my family - my mother's side - thanks to @6000000003399333052 and @6000000033266123662 . Mauno and Annika, I cannot express what you mean to me. That said, I have learned so much about my father's ancient early American side and how it goes back into almost every country in Europe.
The most wonderful thing about Geni that I have found is how we are such an interconnected world. My sweet cousin Juan Carlos Blom @6000000051266972015 , (27th cousin once removed) found me! What a joy! He and I are related through a mutual relative in Germany in 1063. While his family went to Denmark and then to Argentina, mine went to Switzerland and England and then the Colonial US. Both he and I are descendants of pioneers to new worlds. We have communicated through Translate Google just as I did with my sweet Swedish cousin who worked with me to fix a common ancestor.
Most lately, I have formed a bond at varying degrees with so many curators (check how many profiles you manage that I need to follow for my family) and pros who have helped me navigate the system. We are building history. Actually, we are building our personal stories and we find out how we are all so interconnected in history. I want to thank especially Erica Howton, Anne Brannen, Jeroen van Dijk, Dan Cornett, Job Waterreus, Bjorn P. Brox, and most recently Tamas Flinn Caldwell-Gilbert for so much assistance on trying to get this right. It is such a sacred duty. I do not know that some of them know how much they have helped me. Some Pros have helped me in ways they do not know such as Cynthia Curtis (Hicks), Suzan Martin, Emily Kent Marget, and Livio Scremin. I learn so much, just reading the discussions. I know there are more real heroes of Geni.
We need to let people know when they do something good. Bad posts will be removed if I can. Take problems up with management. BTW, thanks Mike Strangel for running a tight ship of "organized chaos." It functions most of the time really well. Better than I can say for most systems, that is for sure.
I hope others will post their success stories here. This is the best thing - totally amazing. I am giving a speech about finding my family next week. What are you doing to celebrate finding your family? (No, I do not work for Geni. I have a username like you.:-) Post here. If no one does, I will. Susanne
Susanne Floyd - on and off the grid -- you are mix and matching in your attempt to use the "@" -- to use the "@", you type the @, then you type the person's first of last name, pause and choose the correct name from the pop-up window.
Another way to tag someone is to copy the numerical part of the profile's URL, as you were doing - but putting double-square brackets before [[ and after ]] (no space between them and the number; and that is not when you use the @ )
For @ to work it has to be a recently visited profile before you open the page where you want to use @ since that short-list is loaded together with that page, In addition to recently visited profiles a collection of family member snd profiles you follows.
In any case I recommend using profile-Id to ensure you tag the correct profile if you have many with similar names.
Susanne Floyd - on and off the grid - by " I have a username like you" - do you mean you have entered false information about yourself on Geni, or what do you mean?
Tagging does not always work.
A good piece of advise is to go to the person's profile and do a cut/paste from the URL.
I am very appreciative of the attempt to tag me, friend! I am thankful for others on Geni who are ready and willing and able to help and to those who are just mean spirited I have learned to take the good with the bad.
Thank you again Susanne Floyd - on and off the grid

Susanne - To log in to Geni, I am asked for my e-mail and my password - I am not asked for a username. Some places ask for one to create a username. Geni does not (and never has). I have never seen the term "username" or "user name" applied to Geni before and do not think it actually applies.
I have no idea what you mean by "Everyone has a user name and log in"
(and yes, there are folks on Geni who use a false name - or at least, there have been in the past. Glad to hear not only are you not one of them, but that, like me, you are also offended by the idea)
Muchas gracias por tus amables palabras, Private User. Also, thanks to you Cynthia Curtis, A183502, US7875087 for your kind words.
Private User and I have worked through some of the intricacies of the Geni tagging system and it is not just amazing, but a maze. Again, I appreciate the information.
This is a thread as I said to celebrate the great things that happen on Geni. Perhaps the posting lesson is a good one for the beginning of a thread that is meant to be a shout out to the great curators and helpers - many of them just building their trees to connect to humanity. As someone who has no children of my own, I look at building this tree as a gift to the rest of my family and am just thankful to everyone who makes it possible. As I get older, I see the important things.
Peace and joy!
In light of all the issues with the "inconsistencies", I thought I would revive this thread and point out something that I think is running much better.
The new HTML tree. I resisted it as long as I could as the first few times I tried it made my hair stand on end, but the miracle workers in programming at Geni have made it run much smoother in my opinion that the previous model in Adobe Flash and it took some time, but they have done it. Since I never thought I would say that, I wanted to make sure I thanked all the folks (whomever you are!) for your hard work.
So, maybe that means that the "consistency checker" will work out one day. We can hope. :-)
Erica Howton Yes, I have found it easier to see data conflicts (if I only knew how to solve most of them, but I am learning). I tend to follow lines as I am reading and looking at names and patterns particularly in my Finnish lines as I am really not familiar with them. It is so much easier to follow a path and move through screens going back and forth through one line reading and "following." Much more user friendly.
Here is a shout out for some great collaborators and curators and a suggestion... Do we have someone who deals with Hollywood or celebrity profiles? I couldn't find it on the listing or haven't seen it. Maybe we need someone.
Right now, rev. Darlene Patricia Potts and I have been having a discussion on Merle Oberon, the great actress. She is really vital right now as she crossed barriers of class, caste, and culture to make it in the Western world. We have done what we can and really I am not sure that either of us are related, just rev. Darlene Patricia Potts stumbled on it and started a discussion. Not sure we know of much else to do, but it does need some clean up and MPing. Read the discussion that doesn't show up as a discussion - notes none until you click on the tab and see one. Someone came in and did a few edits since the first post, but really not sourced and not matching the ones we found.
rev. Darlene Patricia Potts, I think they might be able to be marked "partners" as if I am not mistaken, Loretta Young had a child by him. They did not marry and it was hushed by the studios. It was actress Judy Lewis. I remember when Judy played on a popular soap opera when I was growing up.

rev. Darlene Patricia Potts maybe launch a discussion on Clark's profile. Use the source above to get someone to fix it.
Ok in the midst of the Global Pandemic and God help us all we are touched in so many ways already. I have lost the wife of a dear old friend, a mother of a colleague, and I have a sick husband of a dear grad student. This is all so real, but amidst it all we do the work. We are more than necessary now. We are a different kind of essential worker who can point out the times our ancestors made it through 1918 or the bubonic plague. That is hope.
Thanks for a small but important thing that Geni did for me this week. Mike Stangel and Kevin Lawrence Hanit along with Geni Support found my lost relatives. These days, I think that sometimes the work we are doing is so important and will be here for generations to come that making the right connections and finding who we are is the best thing we can do right now. It may be the most important legacy I leave and perhaps that you leave.
I have found out so much on this site. It has made me a better researcher in my professional life too. I ask "What does this mean?" every day. I just wish I could share all I have learned with those before me who had questions. The tools we have today are amazing - even coming with citations. We are doing this for the future. But we are also doing this for the past. All those young men who marched to war forgotten are not with us. All those "unknown" women will become known one day, we can hope through DNA probably, but perhaps some unknown method that will be revealed one day.
I wish you health and safety right now. Hang on and keep documenting our past! Shout out for the past!
It's been a month or so since this thread surfaced, but I think we need it now. Hope everyone will be thankful for something in this horrible time of pandemic. Here is what I am shouting out for:
1. I love that I learn some neat trick from you all every week. This week was the "push pin" trick. I had heard of it ever since I walked onto Geni four years ago, but just not realized its potential or how to use it. Slow leaner here....
2. I have said it before, but it is worth a repeat - I love that we have knowledgeable curators who can straighten out most any mess. I learn from them everyday. Thanks all y'all.
3. Finally, I love that this is a WORLD TREE, not an individual tree. Collaborating, while it can be frustrating at times (when 10,000 profiles are dumped from a gedcom release or just someone/s not realizing dates and locations don't add up) it is still a better way to learn how we are connected on this little blue marble.
So just know that we are all in this together and that is the best "Should Out" of all.
