A Virtual Reconstruction of the Former Crown Jewel of Germany's Libraries
One of the consequences of the Thirty Years' War was that the most important collection of books in the 17th century Holy Roman Empire, the Bibliotheca Palatina, was divided between two principal locations: Heidelberg and the Vatican. Since 2001, Heidelberg University Library has been working on several projects that aim to digitize parts of this great collection, the final goal being a complete virtual reconstruction of the 'mother of all libraries'.

Well differently said: the Pope Gregor XV "took" the library and stored it in the Vatican library, which is a bomb safe basement. Almost nobody actually has access to that library. Heidelberg was completely burned down in 1693. Therefore the Vatican was a safe place for the librerary,
The library was to a large extend collected by Ulrich Fugger, a son of the extremely rich Fugger family.
After years of negotiations a group of researchers were allowed to carry heavy equipment into the basement underneath the Vatican in order to digitize large parts of the library.
