David,
'm tracing my relatives and I can go back to 1648. Eilenberg/Ejlenberg. But there is also a RAv Israel Sapir from Pismie.

I am looking for more information on Pismie, to begin with. From Pismie the family went to Lask and then to Lodz.
Thanks

Mark,

Regretfully I am unable to assist you with the town Pismie or the person Rav Israel Sapir.

You may be aware that Sapir, and similar names such as Shapiro, are toponomic names derived from the town of Speyer, which was one of the few towns in the Rhineland that Jews were allowed to settle in during the 10th or 11th Century.

David , thank you for your prompt response. Actually I knew of Speyer , but never made the connection to Sapir. My parents are from Poland and I'm trying to find the origin of the name and its German connotation. i went back to 1648 and recently found many tombstone of my ancestors in Lodz. Tracing now how they arrivived from Ukraine, via Pismie, LAsk to Lodz.
