The info paragraph father and the linked father are not the same person.
Usually we see a quote " He was the fifth son of George Johnston of that ilk and of Caskieben, the chief of the family of Johnston, by Christian Forbes, daughter of William, seventh baron Forbes."
For some reason the link is to Gilbert Johnston, who is one of his grandfathers. There was more than one Gilbert. The one who married Elizabeth Vaus,(or Vans, or Voos) in 1428 and the one who married Elene Lichton. Not to mention the one who married Margaret Forbes.... It is very confusing
The Narrative part looks Ok, the link is not. From what I have found so far it looks like this: {unless I goofed, which is entirely possible}
All this is from the book Johnston of Caskieben, Crimond and Caiesmill by Dr Lorand V. Johnson. It is an assembly of older writtings from various sources.
Dr, Sir Arthur Johnston @1577 to 1641 and1st wife Mary Knuncle from Mechelen in Brabant (Now Belgium) who died in April 1624, and his 2nd wife, Barbara Gordon who died circa 1650. Barbara was the youngest daughter of John Gordon of Newton Parish Scotland and Margaret Udny, the daughter of Laird Udny in Aberdeenshire Scotland.
Dr Arthur's parents were:
Sir George Johnston 1544 to ??? and Christian Forbes ( Clan Forbes and her father was the 7th Lord Forbes)
NOTE: The Forbes line connects to the Earls of Mar and to Mary Queen of Scots.
"Sir George Johnston (1544-???) ascended as a child to the family titles and properties and married Christian Forbes. His father had been killed at the Battle of Pinkie in September 1547, and Queen Elizabeth granted George his charter the following year at age 4. George and Christian had at least 13 children who came of age as the English were colonizing Virginia. Johnston relatives became deputy treasurer of the Virginia Company, who recruited settlers for the colony -- which may account for the migration of several Johnston families in the 1600s."
Sir Georges Parents were:
Sir William Johnston, Laird of Caskieben who Killed in combat September 1547 at Pinkie Field and his wife Margaret Hay
Willaims Parents were:
James Johnston d-1548, a year after his father and his wife Clara Barclay
James parents were:
William Johnston, who was killed in battle at Flodden Field in 1513 while fighting alongside King James the 4th of Scotland. and his wife Margaret Meldrum.
His parents were:
Alexander Johnston, who's land became a free barony under King James the 2nd and his wife Anges Glaster or Gloster. Married in 1476.
Alexander's parents were:
Sir Gilbert Johnston and Elizabeth Vans, or Vass or Vaus or Vous of Meny They were married around 1428. There are a few Gilberts named after him. Gilbert's second wife was Elizabeth Forbes.
Gilberts parents were:
Stephen Johnston, Known as the secretary or the Clark because of his advanced education. He might have been the secretary or business manager to the Earl of Mar. Stephen married Margaret Garrioch, the daughter of Sir Andrew Garrioch, thus inheriting in 1357, the Caskieben lands in Aberdeenshire Scotland. .
She is also listed as Margaret de Garviach. Also note that in 1350 the Barony of Rothienorman was granted to Stephen de Johnston.
At this point the Johnston's had married into the blood line of King Duncanof Scotland from two routes:
The Line back from Andrew de Garviach
Sir James and his wife Lady Helen of Mar. who increased their lands in 1324 and 1329
Sir John de Garviach who rendered homage for the lands in 1296
Andrew de Garviach the elder who marrie dthe daughter of the constable of Aberdeen circa 1261 to 1266.
Waldevus de Garviach, who was grante dthe charter for Caskieben in 1200 AD
Gospatric MacMadethyn
Madach Earl of Athol, who married the daughter of the Earl of Orkney
Melamre
King Duncan the first of Scotland.
The other Route Goes via the Johnston Family itself.
Stephen de Johnston
to Adam de Johnston
to Gilbert of Johnstone who signe dthe Ragman Rolls in 1296
To Thomas de Johnston
to yet anotehr Gilbert of Johnston or Joneston circa 1249.
Gilbert SON OF JOHN, circa 1191. who signed a surety for Robert the Bruce in 1218, and was the Earl of Moray in 1191.
JOHN, SON OF UHTRED, granted lands of Fedreth and Ardindrach.
UHTRED of TYNEDALE who married Bethoc
Donal Baine
King Duncan the 1st of Scotland
Now I’m waking up.:)
The narrative is:
“JOHNSTON, (DR) ARTHUR, a poet and physician, was born in the year 1587 [SIC: 1577], at Caskieben, the seat of his family, a few miles from Aberdeen. He was the fifth son of George Johnston of that ilk and of Caskieben, the chief of the family of Johnston, by Christian Forbes, daughter of William, seventh baron Forbes ...”
But the tree has him as son of Christian Forbes & GILBERT not George:
Sir George Johnston of that Ilk, and of Caskieben
However that’s an error in Display name as the actual name fields are GEORGE.
Back in a minute.
The children need review. For example, he may have had a daughter Margaret, and perhaps she’s been conflated with Margaret Johnston who married a Burnett & was christened as the daughter of a JOHN Johnston.
Supposedly Dr. Arthur Johnston had at least 13 children, according to a couple sources. And to make matters worse, everybody in that family line had a daughter named Margaret, or married a Margaret. And so did apparently every family they knew or saw out their windows. ( It was probably super popular when Margaret Tudor, older sister of Henry the 8th was their Queen )
Plus a lot of the older information is a big mash-up of even older stuff that was copied over and over. When you try to sort through it all, it becomes a big jumble.
