Hi,
Would anyone know how I could trace my grandfather's movements - he came to South Africa to fight in the Boer War from Australia but was not allowed to enlist in the end as he was born in Trieste, then Yugoslavia - I guess due to the alliance with Austria/Germany/Afrikaners??
Any shipping lists from Australia to South Africa in late 1800's? He was working on the mines in Australia but not sure where. His name was Giovanni Jurcich but the spelling could be different as I believe the name in Europe was Jurcic.
Thank you. Ann

Did he stay in South Africa?
You could try a search on NAAIRS?

Hi Ann
Where have you searched so far?

Hi Ann

I found a death notice on FamilySearch for John Jurcich 1856-1930 and staying in Orchards, Johannesburg and born in Austria. John is also the English name for Giovanni. On Geni there is information on Ivan Giovanni Jurcich 1855-1929.

Does that tie in with your information?

Regards
Jenny Dixon

Hi Ann. Do you think that spelling could be Giuricich. This is a well known family in Johannesburg. There were three or four brothers I think that we’re involved in the construction industry and their descendants are still in this business
Mark

Thank you all - He would have probably been born either Giovanni or Ivan but was known as John - not sure about in Australia?? I do not know of NAAIRS? I use Family Search, Ancestry and Geni but have nothing more concrete to go on than his death notice and what I heard from my mother about their life in Orchards area. Know his birth date was 24th Dec. It is def not Giuricich. In fo on Geni is what a cousin put there - we have no specifics. Not sure where to search as I feel I may get facts from shipping data or employment data in Aus?

NAAIRS is the South African Government's Archives. A good source of info.
I did a search on there and all that comes up is some info on a John Justus Jurcich

Hi Alan Thompson
Will I be able to get Birth records from NAAIRS? I need to find my Grandfather Behr's Birth record, to know who my Gr Grandparents were.

Unlikely but you could try the following sites that have RSA birth data;
www.ancestor.co.za
or
www.gendatabase.com
NAAIRS will generally have death, probate, divorce and any legal action records. Haven't seen any birth records on there.

Birth records are in Dept of Home Affairs, not NAAIRS

Thanks Saul
