We received the following information from a researcher working elsewhere; she believes this John Price has been confused with another. I'm hoping a manager and/or nearby curators Erica Howton and Erin Ishimoticha can tease apart the two:

The following information posted in this profile belongs to a different John Price who resided in Augusta County in 1749. Moved to Culpeper County during the French & Indian War, then returned to what was then Frederick County. Frederick County renamed Dunmore and Dunmore renamed Shenandoah. My direct ancestor is Thomas Price, one of the children listed. He was born 22 April 1750 in Frederick County (Revolutionary War Pension Application). His siblings named in the will of their father John Price Sr. are not children of a John Sawyer Price and Sarah Randolph. The family is clearly identified in a 1796 Shenandoah County Deed Record Book K page 425. Please remove the entry below as it does not belong to this family.

["entry below" refers to these two lines from the About Me:]
"John and Mary were parents of the following 10 known children: John Price (1747-1810), Thomas Price (1750-1835), Elizabeth Price (1752-1837), Sarah Price (1754-), Edward Price (1755-1832), Mary Price (1756-), Rachel Price (1758-1833), Sampson Price (1761-1850), Zachariah Price (1763-) and Nancy Ann Price (1765-).

John died on Apr. 12, 1780 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA. He was 61 years old. Mary died in 1797 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA. She was 78 years old."

My documents are posted in familysearch.org memories for John Price ID K6HR-MWJ and on ancestry gallery https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/971019/person/-164...

Because many individuals either do not use primary sources or they wish to connect to John Price the Emmigrant of Jamestown, connections are made that are not accurate. Thank You for helping to remove false information.

Thomas Price, Sr., Continental Army Given to correct parents. Thank you for calling attention.

Thanks Erica! What do you make of the mention of Sarah Randolph where we have Mary Randolph?

8/7/2019 at 10:20 PM

Sarah Randolph is an error for Mary and not part of this family.

Not quite done yet, but it looks like 4 different John Price’s have been confabulated:

- John Price, of Essex County married Ann Price. I don’t know their children.
- John Price, of Halifax County married Elizabeth Price
- John Price, Jr., of ‘Coolwater’ married Mary Price
- John Price, Sr., of Shenandoah County married Sarah Price

Price Y DNA project is here, I’m sure it would be helpful to get more uploads linked in:

By the way, I’ve now chatted a bit with Private User , and she’s working on getting ftDNA tests linked into Geni. It’s like she was reading my wish-list.

Awesome, thanks again.

If I can help in anyway, please advise me of the correct procedure. Because I have been working over three years to refute false information posted on the web, I have many records for three of the four families mentioned. In regards to Caswell County I have a John Price born 1759 married to Mary Brown. He served in the Revolutionary War and has a pension application recorded at http://revwarapps.org/ This application contains marriage and birth information for the family. This John Price is the son of Thomas Price brother of the John Price born 1719 in Middlesex Virginia.

From Chancery Court Records of Cumberland County Virginia: ...your orator John Price of the said county is one of the sons of a certain John Price formerly of Essex but now deceased...1771 or 1772 after having duly made and published in writing his last will and testament bearing the date 27th day of November 1771 and recorded in the said County Court of Essex on the 16th day of March 1772...Heirs named wife Ann, sons Thomas, Richard, William and John...Thomas departed this life...leaving John Price his eldest son heir at law...Richard Price deceased and William Price departed intestate..your orator only surviving brother... Cumberland Chancery Causes John Price & Heirs of Thomas Price &c ( DeJarnett, Michaux, Anderson, Boulware, Wright) 1792 packet 2 pages 17 and 18

My viewpoint on the name John Sawyer Price is that it was based on speculation. Some of the descendants for this supposed individual are Anger Price, Reuben Price, Richard Price, Daniel Price of Russell County Virginia later Tennessee. Because YDNA and autosomal DNA connects these individuals to my line and because they resided in Shenandoah County before moving on, I believe them to be cousins to my John Price of Shenandoah County. I have my theories on this but do not post as I have no primary evidence. I do know that some of what has been posted is false.

Of the individuals mention above, Reuben Price and wife Dorothy Cody were parents of a John Sawyer Price born 11 March 1798 in Knox County Tennessee. This seems to be the origin of the name. in the earlier generation.

One important correction Marriage records of Shenandoah County Virginia found in digital images show Richard Price married Lucy Price not Lucy Estill found in many trees. Also Anger Price married Jane Price not Nelson as some have said.

I am extremely grateful for all those who are working to provide accurate data. I am happy to have found this site.

Private User I just saw the wonderful tree building you are doing, this is fabulous.

Geni is collaborative, feel free to update existing profiles and extend families; you’ve been providing sources as you do so & this is exactly right.

Volunteer curators are at your service to help correct errors, especially technical ones; and to mark as Master Profiles well-documented profiles, and / or those prone to mixups (like the Prices). You may want to “follow” and utilize two “sticky” discussions:

“Attention Curators please assist”
https://www.geni.com/discussions/192543

“Curators, my profile is good enough to be an MP”
https://www.geni.com/discussions/192131

And I’m inviting you a project dedicated to Colonial American genealogy:

https://www.geni.com/projects/Colonial-American-Tree-Cleanup/49093

Very glad you found us.

Forgot to mention that I’ve been running across the Name John Sawyer Price in various Price trees; i suspect it’s bogus. Middle names didn’t really come into use until after the Revolution.

There’s probably a real one in 1850s Tennessee that got anachronistically namesaked. :)

Thanks Erica Howton and Private User -- I'm grateful for your expertise!

So sorry I do not have any information matching the above query. Dan S Curd has early
Price ancestors in Virginia. May be able to help confirm or deny a Joseph matching the query. He has an online book "The Curd Family in America" including Price information. danscurd@gmail.com

Two Price families I know that have sons named Joseph possibly born about 1772 are brothers Richard Price and Thomas Price, residing Russell County, VA, died 1803 and 1804 respectively. Russell County Will Book 2 Pages 3-12 and Russell County Will Book 2 Page 76. Also wills found online at http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~varussell/probate/thomasprice.html. Do not have web address for Richard's will but think it was also found on rootsweb.

Another possibility may be Joseph Shores Price. Do not have names of children. His family from Henrico County I believe.

Delbert Hiestand - please see above, and good luck.

4/28/2023 at 9:45 PM

Delbert Hiestand public trees at Ancestry are giving his parents as:
Conrad Leonard Preiss
1752–1812
BIRTH 24 DEC 1752 • Montgomery, Montgomery, Virginia, USA
DEATH 3 APR 1812 • St Charles County, Missouri
and
Anna Elizabeth Mallo
1765–1812
BIRTH 12 JAN 1765 • Gaheysville, Rockingham, Virginia, USA
DEATH APR 1812 • , , Missouri, USA

Different family from these, I think.
Dans S Curd is my cousin.
He is the author of “The Curd Family in America: Eight Generations, a revised edition of The Curd Family in America, published in 1938 by Thomas H. S. Curd and Frank D. Fuller, and lasted updated by Thomas H. S. Curd, Jr., in 1981.”
While it is not technically an “online book”, it can be viewed online: https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/600711-redi...
He has Curd, Price and Watkins family info but again, different family, I think. No “Joseph Price” in his tree.
You might also check the FtDNA site for the Y DNA studies.
That can be very helpful in finding the correct family line one is looking for.

My mistake, Joseph Price was born 1778 Virginia. People who knew him said he was English, so not German.

4/29/2023 at 7:37 AM

I appreciate alk the help, thank you!

4/29/2023 at 8:23 AM

Delbert Hiestand you may have an amalgam? Joseph Price, husband of Theodosia Rockhill is showing in public trees t Ancestry as son of Joseph Price and NN Heinz with son Joseph born in 1755.
Since I don't see your Price in your pedigree, I don't know who your line shows here at Geni but you can always start a Discussion under the profile of the individual you are looking for help with.
I think this Discussion is complete?
