Thomas I Breland - Death of Thomas Isaac Breeland on 9 Aug 1847

Does anyone have definitive (or other) information about the death of Thomas I Breeland on 9 Aug 1847, the day his son, David Alexander Breeland was born? His wife, Frances "Lizzie" McKenzie died 3 days later. A distant cousin has relayed to me that she grew up understanding that he, or they, drowned while crossing the Pearl River. Is there any documentation of this?

I am his 2nd great granddaughter through David Alexander Breeland and his son Elisha Holmes Breeland.
