William currently has three sets of parents, and I can't find any evidence that any of them are really his parents. I've seen zero evidence that he was foster parented, so it seems reasonable to eliminate the no-name foster parents.
Capt. Thomas Hill, Sr., of Charles City and his wife look like wishful thinking. They're not even in the right place (Northumberland County).
But there's no evidence for Robert Samuel Hill and his wife either. The notes on William's profile gives https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LZ84-QWZ/william-abraham-hill... as a reference. But the will that's extensively quoted there is not the will of William Hill or his parents.
I'm even less confident about William Hill's children. The link above quotes his grandson's will naming some cousins who are reportedly the children of William Hill. But it's probably not the same William Hill. The children of our William Hill would be the aunts and uncles of his grandson, not cousins.
I'm specifically interested in William's "daughter" Susannah Ellis, of Christ Church Parish and her son Hezekiah Ellis
Susannah currently has two fathers and three mothers. Apparently her parents are actually unknown.
The article at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ellissurnamedna/genealogy/In_Search_... spends 40 pages trying to identify Hezekiah's ancestry without coming to a conclusion. It says that "The circumstances suggest Edward and Susannah were his parents" but his parentage is unproved. There were other people named Ellis in the area, but no evidence to link them to Hezekiah either.
Page 3 of the article says they agree that there was an Edward Ellis who married Susannah Hill in Middlesex County at the appropriate time. But they're not certain that these people were Hezekiah's parents, and they can't identify the parents of Edward Ellis.
Page 32 of that article talks briefly about Susannah's parents. It says that the only identifiable Susannah Hill with a father named William was from Maryland (not Middlesex County Virginia). There was a person named William Hill in Middlesex County at the time of Susannah's birth, but apparently nothing else is known about him.
The link referenced in profile for
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LZ84-QWZ?icid=amp_... Is a mess. Can the Geni profile be better detailed & sourced?
I’m undoing merges on Susannah Hill & then will look for info from the Ellis family point of view.
Thank you Erica Howton. Do we have a source for Phyllis Lyman as the mother of Susannah Ellis? Phyllis currently has a mix of Connecticut and Virginia as her birthplace, so it looks like there's some confusion about her.
The 40-page article at http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ellissurnamedna/genealogy/In_Search_... is the only source I've seen that seriously tried to document the ancestry of Hezekiah Ellis - primarily his father but briefly his mother. Edward Ellis and Susannah Hill do look like the most likely pair - they were in the right place at the right time, and the couple of other Ellises in the area at the time don't stand out as better candidates. But the parentage of either one of them is hard to figure out.
Susannah Ellis, of Christ Church Parish Had been allocated to a HillS family of Hartford CT; don’t think so.
Could enter a theoretical (?) William Hill of Middlesex but I’m thinking without more records better to leave her parentless / relationship locked & about future magic carpet riding ?
Edward Ellis, Jr. Looks fine except he had at some point been confused with a King Philip’s War veteran - don’t think so - so I de tagged images.
It would help a lot if the “abouts” got detailed with what we do know.
Anyway it’s a lot better now !
I agree that Susanna Ellis is better off without parents. It's way too speculative otherwise.
Now Hezekiah has two wives named Mary. Dang! It's like the parents multiply every time I turn my back. Both Marys are listed as the mother John Paris Ellis, Sr. but at the moment I haven't looked at it enough to guess whether either of them is right. This is the one that was originally listed as his mother: Mary Ellis She now has two sets of parents too, which didn't used to be the case.
What I'm getting on Hezekiah's wife is that her name was Mary but no one knows her maiden name. Most sources don't attribute any parents to her. Here's a mention of her in Hezekiah's will, which seems to be the only documentation we have for her: https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/ellis/10079/
People from New England generally don't belong in my family tree, although there are a sprinkling of people from the Massachusetts Bay Colony claiming to be my ancestors.
