I need help thinkingthrough a puzzle on the two final George brothers:
George Doubell, b11 b 28 February 1851
Winterhoek, Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa
and
George Doubell, b12 b 23 April 1853
Winterhoek, Uitenhage, Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa
But, an 1879 Newcastle marriage certificate for a George Doubell born in 1851 marrying a Hester Helena Louisa Doubell suggests differently.
cf on his profile:https://media.geni.com/p13/fc/5a/1b/8f/5344484ca3a65d7d/record-imag...
This is a difficulty I need help thinking through.
Could this be a generation c 1851 George Doubell?
...I can't find one on the Doubell register - and I'm almost at the end of it.
Thoughts? Anybody?
On Geni, George Doubell, b12 has a daughter, Alice Maria Doubell but I can't find Sources for her. Private User do you ave any?
Alice Maria Doubell, , born 27 Dec. 1876, bapt. 6 May 1877, Uitenhage NGK, daughter of George DOUBELL and Elizabeth Magdalena Petronella PITOUT, "klein Winterhoek" - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSK6-T9KM-P - Source: FamilySearch.org; Film No.: 008149427; Page No.: 235; Image No.: 143
I haven't come across a marriage record yet for George and Elizabeth.
Both George's do have baptism records:
b11 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKX-9S7M-R
b12 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKX-9S4Z-7
So, either b12 re-married and the age on the 1879 Newcastle marriage is incorrect, or the two George's were known by nicknames, perhaps?
The problem of two boys both named George is that by the time of their father (Michael George's) death in 1871 only one remains. (And there's still only one on the DN of their mother (Aletta de Lange's) 14 July 1879 death in Uitenhage)
But a George Doubell & an Elizabeth Magdalena Petronella Pitout have an Alice Maria Doubell on 27 December 1876 in Uitenhage
And a 28 yr old Bachelor (so b 1851) George Doubell marries 22 yr old Hester Helena Louisa v Niekerk on 21 July 1879 (only 7 days after Aletta de Lange's death) in Newcastle
They (George and Hester) have a Maria Susan Magdalena Doubell in Bethlehem, Free State on 20 Aug 1880 and also c 1880 (estimated on her marriage certificate, where she is supposedly 17 in Newcastle in 1897) an Aletta Maria Doubell
1851 George 11
1853 George 12
1871 Michael George dies & there is only ONE George left
1876 27 Dec, George 12? & Elizabeth Pitout have Alice Maria
1879 14 July, Aletta Maria dies & only ONE George
1879 21 July, George 11? a 28yr old bachelor marries Hester v Niekerk in Newcastle
1880 20 Aug, George 11? & Hester have Maria Susan Magdelena in Bethlehem
1881? George 11? & Hester have Aletta Maria
Is there only 1 George by 1871? - the bachelor George who marries Hester V Niekerk and says that he's the age his dead older brother would have been, who was not actually married to Alice's mother, Elizabeth Pitout?
Or are there two Georges all along, and the second one is baptised by his grandparents in place of an unmarried (or dead) daughter? So, not recorded on their DNs as their child?
No idea how helpful this would be, but there is an 1895 divorce record for George DOUBELL and Hester Helena Louise VAN NIEKERK, in the Pietermaritzburg Archives - Depot: NAB; Source: RSC; Type: LEER; Vol. No.: 1/5/146; Ref. No.: 44/1894

The baptism record for George 11 is a bit peculiar:
George [Doubell] Geb 28 Feb 1851; Ged 30 Mar 1851
Ouders: Michael George Doubell; Aletta Maria de Lange
Getuigen: Michael George Doubell; Maria Aletta Doubell
Winterhoek
1.There is no other Michael George Doubell who could have been a witness, except the PROG - who is also puportedly the father.
2. There is no Maria Aletta Doubell until years and years later.
Suggests that the clerk was muddled altogether and got it wrong?
