Erich and Hilde got married on Wednesday 5th July 1939 in Guildford, Surrey, England. The venue was Artington House, the register office for the area. I know because a newspaper report headed "Cupid Among the Refugees" also describes my uncle's wedding to a German refugee that had taken place 4 days earlier. The article says that Erich arrived in Albury in February 1939. Albury is a nearby village which housed scores of Sudeten German Social Democrat refugees from Czechoslovakia. The newspaper report adds: "After a quiet tea the wedding party rounded off the occasion with a visit to the local cinema." On 12th July the couple sailed from Liverpool on the "Montrose" for their new life in Canada, helped by a grant of £200 from the government who were trying to ship as many refugees as possible off to the colonies before war broke out.
