Captain Edward Brock https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Brock-1360

Captain William Edward Brock https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/y/o/u/Noel-A-Young/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0...

Can anyone identify the correct name of this man?

Some say that he was born in Scotland in 1654 https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0153... while others say that he was born in England in that year https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=n............ At least one pedigree claims that he was born in 1634 and that he was the son of John Brock and Marie Hamilton of Glasgow in Scotland https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:3CQJ-2ZV but I have been unable to identify a baptismal record for him in the period before 1655.

Can anyone identify any authentic evidence for this man's date and place of birth, or the name of his father or mother?

Can find nothing on Origins.

Clearly associated with Colonel Ninian Beall & (perhaps the 2nd) Mareen Duvall "The Elder" - prominent men of the Colony. Sadly, this may shed no light on his origins ... What was his religion ?

So far I have been unable to identify his religion.

He’s called “an Irishman” in this genealogy with no parents identified:

“Ancestors of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. Jeff Carter McFarland, Jan 10, 2014 - Biography & Autobiography - 224 pages
4 Reviews

.... During his presidency, Jimmy Carter received a comprehensive analysis of his family’s genealogy, dating back 12 generations, from leaders of the Mormon Church. More recently Carter’s son Jeff took over the family history, determined to discover all that he could about his ancestors ...

——

I’ll also go into Archives of Maryland and look for DNA studies, but let’s put it like this: Jeff Carter has access to top American genealogists. So even if the original IGI work done for his father in the 1970s had errors, the 2014 date stamp of this (well received) publication suggests “we don’t know his origins” to me.

His son in law William Offutt was a “staunch Presbyterian,” which suggests similar religion for Capt. Edward Brock.

http://www.librarything.com/work/12579778/reviews/103753336 Reviews of Jeff Carter’s book, including good summaries of it. This if of interest to many of us with Southern USA background.

This comment is especially relevant to this Brock / Offutt line, perhaps:

“All of President Carter’s European ancestors came from the British Isles. Many were English, but many others were “Scotch-Irish” (Ulster Presbyterians). ...”

A “before 1672” arrival does suggest to me an Ulster Plantation Birth or sojourn, but of course that’s just a guess.

Is there any evidence on the proposed parent side to indicate they had a son called Edward? John Brock in Glasgow & Marie Hamilton ?

I do not see that male Brock’s in Scotland have tested Y DNA with the ftDNA vendor. As Capt. Edward had no male descendants, this would be a difficult case to make via DNA studies in any event.

It appears possible that the wife of Edward Brock (perhaps her name was Sarah) had been married previously to an Evans; with a daughter Mary Evans married a John Demall Jr. However the relationships are not yet clear to me.

I'll show why I believe Brock and Edward MOCKBEE were children
of Mary's half (or step) sister Jane (BROCKE) MOCKBEE and that Ann (EVANS) POTTENGER was Mary's niece, daughter of Mary's brother Richard.]

https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=gwenbj&id...

“Skordas gives the two names blotted on the microfilm as Sarah MILES and William EVANS. [Note this is very clearly written BROOKE. I haven't found any further records of an Edward BROOKE in Calvert County, and based on records below, believe the clerk misread the original of BROCKE in copying this into the patent book. I believe all the EVANS to be his step-children, or perhaps one (Sarah?) was his wife and transported before marriage. I believe the Richard to be the Richard EVANS who was father of Ann EVANS who married Robert POTTENGER. I believe Mary EVANS to be the wife of John DEMALL, Jr.] from Frederic Z. Saunders.

Mary Jane Williams Would be the mother of this John Demall.

There’s a rather dramatic story about the Mogbee children of Miss Brock (also could help establish a timeline for Brock’s wife).

“Jane, widow of Matthew Mockbee that died Bef. May 16, 1709 in Prince George's County, MD., is not the daughter of Capt. Edward Brock.

The daughter of Capt. Brock that married Matthew Mockbee is unknown as far as her given name. Miss Brock married Matthew Mockbee and had two sons Matthew and Brock Mockbee. Then Miss Brock died and Matthew remarried to Jane widow of John Joyce. They had a child together who was very young when Matthew Mockbee died leaving his widow now with 3 small children.”

“Capt Edward Brock wanted custody of his grandsons after their father died so he took them from her and she had to go to court to fight for their custody. Capt. Edward Brock lost the case, but the court couldn't make him return the children to their step-mother.”
