The gist of the problem of her parents is mentioned here, with citations:

“According to the Scots Peerage (SP), Jean de Haliburton, wife of Henry Sinclair, 1st Earl of Orkney, was the sister of Sir Walter de Haliburton, not the daughter as per CP X:95. Chronologically it seems to work either way, there isn’t enough information between the two sources to make a positive determination.”
Here’s the argument for her as daughter of Walter, not sister.

Her father sometimes shown as William (Sir) (of Dirleton Castle) Haliburton
However From Doug Hickling:
"I can supply the correct first name of the father of Jean Haliburton who married Henry (1st Earl of Orkney) Sinclair. SP4:333 shows that Jean was the daughter of John, nephew of Walter (Sir) Haliburton and Dirleton, son of Sir Adam Haliburton who died in 1337. However, there is a correction in SP9:102, which says that John was the son, not the nephew of Walter (Sir) and that Jean, who married Henry St Clair, who was listed as John's daughter was placed a generation too low and was, in fact, the daughter of Walter (Sir). As evidence supporting the correction, the compilers cite a 1388 charter which styled Henry St Clair, Earl of Orkney, as the brother of John (Sir) Haliburton.”
SP= THE SCOTS PEERAGE was edited by James (Sir) Balfour Paul
This is I believe the Sir Walter Il Halyburton, Lord Halyburton of Dirleton suggested as her father in the citation above.

Eugene Thomas Another Scots parentage brain twister.
I wish we could see the charter where Henry Sinclair calls John Haliburton his brother in law and be clear on “which” John Haliburton.
So far I’m inclining to Sir Walter Il Halyburton, Lord Halyburton of Dirleton or continuing with “too many conflicting theories.”

married Jean, (Joneta or Joan) Haliburton, daughter of Sir Walter de Haliburton, 1st Lord Haliburton of Dirleton

He married Isobel, daughter of the Regent, Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, widow of Alexander Leslie, Earl of Ross (d. 1402), and they had four sons and one daughter:
John Haliburton, 2nd Lord Haliburton of Dirleton
Walter Haliburton, who married Catherine who is daughter & co-heiress of Alexander de Chisholm.
Robert Haliburton
William Haliburton
Jean Haliburton, married to Henry I Sinclair, Earl of Orkney
A round about way of saying Henry Sinclair calling John his brother in law. Henry married John's sister.

Where Jean is placed as daughter of John and Margaret Stewart.
Volume 9 is saying: we were wrong, she’s actually the daughter of Sir Walter (son of Adam, described on https://archive.org/details/scotspeeragefoun04pauluoft/page/331 )
Do we agree with moving Jean?
In case anyone needs to know, this describes the 9 volume SP

I agree with the parent of Jean being Walter.
