As for Rurik being "iffy", Igor had to have a father biologically, whether his father's name was actually Rurik is impossible to prove but that's the tradition. Whether there ever was a man name Rurik is difficult to say. Whether there was a man that lived the life of the legendary Rurik is very unlikely, the earliest sources are still at least hundreds of years after the events.

I used google translate. It helps a bit, though perhaps not quite accurate.
