Hello,
Concerning the profile of "John Allen, of Barnstable" (John Allen, of Sandwich), Son of Ralph 'Wheelright' Allen, Sr., of Sandwich (Ralph 'Wheelwright' Allen, Sr., of Sandwich), there are NO records that show that John son of Ralph was ever in Barnstable. There is a John Allen who married Elizabeth Bacon in Barnstable in 1650, but this is John Allen of Newport, RI, not the son of Ralph Allen.

There was also a John Allen, son of Thomas Allen of Barnstable, bapt. 27 Sep 1646, m. 1674 Mary Howland dau. of John & Mary Lee Howland, b. Plymouth or Marshfield abt. 1652. He moved to Middleborough MA 1682-1683, then moved about 1703 to NE CT, and died in Killingly CT in 1715.

And there was also a John Allen of Sandwich, son of George and Hannah (unknown) Allen, b. 5 Aug 1658. When he reached his full age, John son of George was sometimes (but not always) called John Allen Jr., while John son of Ralph Allen was called John Allen Sr.

So I think that the name of the profile of "John Allen, of Barnstable" should be changed to avoid confusion between the other two John Allens (and possibly John Sr. & John Jr. of Rehoboth). I think that the profile should be changed to something like "John Allen Sr., of Sandwich".

Richardson B. Allen Agreed and done.

Can you check the wives also? So far I see only that “his widow was Rebecca” (who later married a Launders) and the three children named at Probate: Isaac, Benjamin, Judah.

Yes, John had only one marriage, a Rebecca, but there is no record of the marriage. It appears that John was first married when he was about 50 years old (b. by 1640, first child Isaac Allen, b. 1691).

According to the index [Sandwich Town Records, Book 2, Births, Marriages, Deaths, and Earmarks], page 4 contained the record of births in the following families: Daniel Wing 1687; John Dillingham 1689; John Allen 1691; Elizabeth Cleaves 1691; Nathan Barlow 1692/3; Ephraim Tobey 1693; Bethiah Gale 1693. Already missing in 1862 [Frederick Freeman, The history of Cape Cod].

Records of John "Sr." between 1675-1694:
1st) Persons admitted to full rights in town (Sandwich) include George, Jedidiah, William, Ralfe, Frances, Caleb Allen and John Allen Sr., 23:2mo:1675.
last) 10 May 1694, William Bassett deputed to demand of John Allin Sr. the towns weights & mensurers that are now in his custody.
Petition to William Stoughton Lt. Governor of Mass. Bay, requesting approval of disposition of necks of land at Sandwich according to meeting 16 Mar 1696[/7?], signed by Ralph Allin & John Allin [MA Archives, v. 113, #145] (no Sr.!).

New England Marriages to 1700: John Allen (?1654-1706) [but probably, by 1640-1706] & Rebecca ____?, m/2 [?Richard] Launders; ca 1696?; Sandwich

First mention of John's wife: Administration on estate of John Allen of Sandwich, died intestate, to widow Rebecca, dated 20 May 1706, inventory presented same day.

Angus Wood-Salomon I think your merge undo did the fix, the only thing further was disconnecting Benjamin Allen from wrong parents.

I’m looking for a source that lists out Mary Allyn children but I’m pretty sure she did not have a child Benjamin, and the rest seem OK.

Well known. See: White, Elizabeth Pearson, 1993, John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 2, the first five generations, documented descendants through his second child John2 Howland and his wife Mary Lee. Picton Press, Camden ME, p. 23-31. John's father, Thomas Allyn, is also well known, discussed in several books.

Benjamin Allen (Benjamin Allen) was the second son of John Allen Sr. He had only one wife, Waitstell Bowerman. His will, dated Feb 1775, probate Apr 1775, doesn't mention a wife, but Waitstill Allin relinquished some land in Dartmouth on 30 Apr 1766. Benjamin was in Sandwich in 1720, moved to Falmouth, Barnstable Co. by 1721, and James Howland of Dartmouth yeoman sold a 65 acre farm in Dartmouth to Benjamin of Falmouth in 1745. The 1771 Tax & Poll Lists [Mass. Archives] shows that there were 3 or 4 Benjamin Allens in Dartmouth in 1771, so it is easy to confuse the various Benjamins.

Thank you, I disconnected Mary (Akin or Aikin) Aiken as wife of this Benjamin.

All the children attached to Mary Allyn are correct and sourced.

Richardson, this seems to be solid documentation. Thanks for making all the distinctions. I agree with your suggested change. In fact I think it is wise with several personalities who share a common name to include a distinctive identifier such as profession and/or community name.

William Arthur Allen What’s especially nice about using a toponym (suffix) and / or occupation nickname (middle name field, in quotes) is that it’s record supported. All the wills I’ve seen from this period (and many others) begin with a self identification by their town. Sr & Jr are confusing to modern eyes-on because they did not mean the same thing (son of ...) that it does now.

William Arthur Allen

Unfortunately, it is common to see several people of the same name in the same town or area, especially in the 1700's before middle names were used. I've been trying to trace Benjamin Allen (Benjamin5, Benjamin4, John3, Ralph2, George1 Allen) in the Dartmouth area in the 1700's-early 1800's. But I have found 13 Benjamin Allens in this area and date:

Benjamin Allen, 1742-1829
Benjamin Allen, wife Abiah
Benjamin4, John3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin4, Joseph3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin4, Increase3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin5, Benjamin4, Increase3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin5, Jedediah4, Increase3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin5, William4, Joseph3, Ralph2, George1 Allen (?)
Benjamin6, Philip5, John4, Joseph3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin6, Judah5, Benjamin4, John3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin7, Increase5, Jedediah4, Increase3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin7, Jedediah6, Philip5, John4, Joseph3, Ralph2, George1 Allen
Benjamin F.8, Benjamin7, Jedediah6, Philip5, John4, Joseph3, Ralph2, George1 Allen

And Benjamin's brother, Thomas Allen, is almost as difficult. So confusion is common!
