Richard Howard Heard was my Great Grandfather. We've been searching for more information on his Parents. It's well known that his father was one of the Heard Brothers and our old family rumors suggest John Heard. However, more recently, after having DNA done, we have found a common ancestor that suggests Albert Heard and his protected woman (Lam Kew Fong) may be Richard Howard Heard's parents.

I do not think it's possible that Alice Heard (Leeds) is the mother of Richard. She would only have been 14 or 15 when he was born. There was a gap of 7 years before John & Alice's next child was born in the USA. Richard was born in Macau. Alice was born in New York. Is there any evidence that her family was in Macau when she was a teenager? We are very interested in finding out more about our Great Great Grandparents. We have documentation that John & Alice were married in 1867.

I am interested in knowing where you got information that Richard was known as "Harrie". Also, we cannot find where John Heard's middle name was Vestol. Our family has been trying to find out more information for years so anything you can share would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hello, Beverly!

If I'm reading the revision history correctly, it looks like the "Vestol" was added to John Heard through a merge that was later undone. Since I can't find a record anywhere of this John Heard having that for a middle name, I'm going to go ahead and remove it. We'll have to check Richard's profile next.

The "Harrie" in Richard Howard Heard appears on the 1880 U.S. Federal Census.

Thank you so much for your reply. I will attempt to find that on the 1880 US Census. We are still not at all sure of his parentage and so far four of my cousins' Ancestry DNA have 1% China listed. It's been a somewhat dark secret that we're hoping to unravel in our lifetime!

Ashley, I'm unable to find this Richard Howard Heard in the 1880 Census and none named Richard Howard "Harrie".

He's listed just as "Harrie Heard." I can upload it for you later.

I should stress that I did not do the primary source research on this family, so if you have reason to think that men are getting mixed up, you should work with the profile manager(s) who added the info. They will be better know the sources they used.

Thank you so much Ashley. Much appreciated. I have written to the profile manager twice before with no reply (months ago). After I see the upload, we might be able to tell more and will try getting back in touch with the profile manager(s). Thank you again for your help.
