Born 1780, the son of John Carty and Mary Keeffe and (most likely) baptised in Borris Catholic Church, Co Carlow, Ireland. (Surviving parish registers date from 1782. Denis is named as the son of John Carty and Mary Keeffe in the Will of Denis Carty of Birchgrove, Co Wexford, Ireland, proved 1794. Searchable on findmypast.ie Historical sources state that Denis Carty was aged 19 in 1798 when he participated in the Rebellion of Wexford and this provides our only source of proof for his birth year. These printed historical sources also state that his widowed mother was then living in Ballycarney, Co Wexford.)

Denis Carty's siblings' baptisms appear in the oldest surviving register for Borris, Co Carlow thus:
(1) John Carty baptised 6 August 1783 - Parents: John Carty and Mary Keeffe - Sponsors: Luke Hegarty and Rose Keeffe.
(2) Catherine Carty baptised 24 October 1784 - Parents: John Carty and Mary Keeffe - Sponsors: Edmond Hegarty and Margaret Keeffe
