GRAVES AT RISK - the graves of famous Kromdraai Gold Miner William Lizamore and his wife Susanna are at risk, along with others, including a member of the Grobler family who were the first owners of the Kromdraai farm. The Mogale City Water Dept are running a water pipe next to the road between the Kromdraai Cash Store and Sterkfontein Caves and the graves are right next to where they are digging.
William Lizamore and Minaar established the Kromdraai Gold Mine, the first official gold mine in the then Transvaal, proclaimed by President Kruger in the 1880's. Meaning Lizamore was the grandfather of the gold rush that led to the discovery of the Witwatersrand Gold Mines that built Johannesburg and other towns.
It will be a sad historical loss as well as desecration if the digging continues.
