So far the information I have is from the book "Colonial Families of the Soouthern States of America" where it states that Capt. John Collier of Porto Bello, King and Queen Co., and later of Hanover Co., Va., etc etc. Nothing said about how ownership of Porto Bello came about. Perhaps there is more than one "Porto Bello"?

“John Collier of “Porto Bello” – His estate was situated on the York River not far above Yorktown, and was called “Porto Bello” in honor of that famous fortress on the Spanish Main. He was a liberal Churchman; served as a Vestryman of the Lower Parish. He took a prominent part in affairs of State. ...”

“Hello you Porto Bello descendants. I am one too. My mother is a Collier. I am descended from the John Collier you mentioned. I still live in Virginia. Our line never left Virginia. I went to Porto Bello to visit also. The plantation/house is not the original one but it was great to just go there. I thought it was great how we were escorted/driven to the house. I think I remember that it was a CIA training camp. I live a little over an hour from there in Petersburg/Chesterfield. My line goes from John, John, John, Nathaniel, Robert, James, Nathaniel, James, and then my mother Frances. I am doing that from memory so I may not have the names exactly in order. It is so odd to see how many people from all over the nation that came from this line of Colliers. I've seen information on the internet about people in Texas and Kentucky. One of the John Colliers got paid in land in Kentucky for his service in the Revolutionary War since the nation was broke at the time. If you go to the Valley Forge website and look up John Collier, you'll see he was there. There's so much out there that connects to this family, it's like going on a scavenger hunt. My line of Colliers has lived in the Petersburg area for two hundred years and came to Petersburg from that plantation in York county on Queens Creek. I'll be glad to share what info I have if you get stuck on a question. My latest search is what ship William Collier came over on. He lived in England in 1655 because that's when he got married. I know he died in 1682 in New Kent County, Virginia so he came here between 1655 and 1682. I'm guessing on 1670 because of when and where his children were born. I want to know the ship or find a passenger list with his name on it.”
How is this text holding up against more modern research ?

on the York River, not far above Yorktown, and his estate was named " Porto Bello." This name was given to it after the return of his two sons, who were, according to family tradition and record, officers in one of the Virginia regiments accompanying Admiral Vernon in the Carthagena expedition in 1740-42, and in honor of the famous fortress of " Porto Bello" on the Spanish Main. Lawrence Washington was a Captain in the same regiment, and at about the same time gave his plantation on the Potomac the name " Mount Vernon." Porto Bello appears to have passed out of the family about the middle of the last century," perhaps when the sons or grandsons joined Braddock's Expedition.
